Title: Your help VERY much appreciated
Post by: Cyberus on December 18, 2006, 07:31:13 AM
Forgive me, I'm writing this in a rush before work.

My nephew was killed in a road accident on Friday, and as he had a lot of young friends who are all devestated by this, I thought it would be nice to set up a site where they can all upload pictures of him, write tributes etc.

I would be really grateful if anyone could tell me the quickest, easiest way of doing this. I can register a domain name, but I have no webspace, and wouldn't know how to create a page where people can submit photos and text. Anyone got any ideas on how I can sort something out suitable for this very quickly please?

I would be EXTREMELY grateful

Thanks,
Adam

Create a myspace page for him, then go an register a domain and have it set to forward to the myspace page.

Wired has an article about something similar:

Even though the guy has been gone for a long time, his friends still go to the myspace page and post.

My condolences Adam. This must be a very difficult time.

If you have acces to a Mac, you could very easily create an iPhoto album and publish it to a .Mac account. It automatically creates all the code and uploads it, along with the pictures, to an FTP site of your choice. It's a one-click operation (once you have imported the photos).

Let me know if I can be of any assistance. I would gladly set this up for you on my Mac. I've also got lots of web space if you need to borrow any.

Mark

Just had a thought that this is probably not the best way to do it, as you would have to edit the HTML to add comments, and people would not be able to submit photos and comments themselves (you would have to do it on their behalf).

I think you need to have an account on MySpace to be able to post comments etc. There's LiveJournal (http://www.livejournal.com) which allows anonymous posting but not sure about uploading pictures etc or theres Blogger (http://www.blogger.com).

Dunno if a blog style thing is what you want but there you go. You could also setup a webspace and use Wordpress (http://wordpress.org/). That would probably give you the mjost control, allow you to host and show pictures in whatever format you wanted.

There's also quite a big support community in case you have trouble with it.

Very sorry to hear about your loss :-( hope this helps everyone involved.

Andy

Thanks to all who replied for your suggestions, I have looked into them all, and thanks for your kind words.

A friend suggested flickr or myspace, but I think I might just do a yahoo group instead, as it will fit best with what I want to achieve. Once again, thanks.

My condolences, it is always a great sorrow when a young person leaves us so early...
