Hmmm... Just bought an A1200, and want to upgrade that
standard one, till its abble to run OS3.9 - But thats
another thread and another story..
My Question is...
On my PC 2.8 GhZ 256MB Ram, and and and - I have installed
AmiKit - Now I have bought a OS 3.9 Cd Rom - Can I run a
"complete" amiga, that way ? With AmyKit and The OS3.9 CD?
So that is installed and with a "harddrive" with my Amiga
Files ?! ... Gee.. Can I ?! And then why the f... did I buy
an A1200 ?!?!?!?
Thhihihi... Please help anyone ?!
By the way.. I love my A 1200.. :)

Just a small yes or no ?! :)

Assuming whatever you're trying to run doesn't use any custom chips, it should work fine. I've had trouble using any AGA screens, as the palletes seem to get scrambled, and the picture looks like it would after a bad acid trip.... I don't think UAE has any kind of sound emulation other than AHI, though I haven't played much with that. The 1200 you bought would be your best bet for all that. (I'm still using my 1200 as my primary computer, and just use my xp laptop as a dialing gateway over the LAN, and file conversions that win95+pc-task can't handle) Any proggies that are AHI and RTG compatible have a much better chance at running. Hope this helps!

You can run classic software that use the customs without problem. That cpu is capable enough of doing the task.
Winuae has improved a lot since it's early days.
Try it out for yourself.

Pheeewww... Now Im happy again that I bougt an A1200 again :)
*BIGSMILE*
And it was delivered yesterday..!
Has kick 3.1 - untill now just a "normal" standard...

No, you need a Kickstart file, either.
If your A1200 already has Kick 3.1, you can use the TransROM program which comes with WinUAE to save it to a file.
Other than that, yes, you can run a complete Amiga with WinUAE + Kick 3.1 + OS3.9. AmiKit is an unnecessary extra, but looks nice (and crashes often).
Edit: and don't let you disencourage by kvasir's post. He is obviously speaking about a different program, probably Amithlon. WinUAE is in fact the most compatible "classic" Amiga. It runs more software than a real Amiga ever would, especially programs using custom chips, mostly because you can adjust the "hardware" configuration to the program's needs without the need of degraders and other compatibility programs.

THX Thomas... Does WinUAE like AmiKit help you to install the OS ?! THX
-
Installing 3.9 under WinUAE is hard because you have to install an emergency startup disk image and boot from it in order to start the install process for your hard drive image.
Note: Be sure to use the emergency start disk to boot from when you install 3.9 on your A1200 becuase if you're running the wrong revision of 3.1 it will cause corruption in the install of 3.9 .

No u dont.
I have never ever ever ever ever used the emmergency install disk to install os3.9 on either a real amiga or winuae.
But there again I have always installed 3.1 first,

As for OS 3.9 - it is possible to take an installation from Amiga HD and use it with WinUAE
About difference between behaviour OS 3.9 on my A4k and under WinUAE - it is hard to notice any. WinUAE runs faster :)

Yes, AmiKit installs itself and the OS automatically.
It's a little bit confusing if you have more than one CD-ROM drive, it insists on using the "first" one.
Installing 3.9 under WinUAE is hard because you have to install an emergency startup disk image and boot from it in order to start the install process for your hard drive image.
I don't find it too difficult. You can boot OS3.9 from the CD, no need for an already running system. And creating an emergency disk is the same procedure as it is on a real Amiga, no difference here.

You need a running OS3.9 in order to install OS3.9 correctly. Otherwise at least some icons are not copied correctly.
So you can either create an emergency disk and boot from it before you install OS3.9, or you can install OS3.9 from a running 3.1, reboot and install OS3.9 again. IMHO the emergency disk method is the better way. Not to mention that you achieve a boot disk for the case of emergency.

What do you mean with more that anything that an amiga can do ?

What do you mean with more that anything that an amiga can do ?
If you own a real Amiga you are limited to that model. Software designed especially for another Amiga model does not run or it's difficult to get it to run.
You can add expansions but you are still limited to 10 or 15 years old hardware. And once you start to add expansions, less and less software runs on that machine.
With WinUAE it's much more easy. If you want to run software designed for an A500 you make WinUAE be an A500. If you want to run other software which is designed for an A1200, you make WinUAE be an A1200. And you can even make WinUAE be a CD32 and run CD32 software from CD.
And finally you can make WinUAE be a fantastic high-end Amiga which the world has not seen before. With 8MB Chip-RAM, 512 MB Fast-RAM, 128MB 3D gfx card, sound card, internet, DVD-Writers, huge HDDs, 1 GHz 68040 processor etc.
And all that is displayed on your modern flat screen without any expensive adapters, scandoublers etc. You use your wireless optical mouse, wireless keyboard, analogue gamepads, USB memory drives, even wireless LAN.
