Title: Flatpack fun...
Post by: Karlos on December 16, 2006, 09:32:56 PM
After getting a few odds and sods from Ikea, and the joy of assembling things devoid of instruction...

I should point out that this image was after getting a bed that had absolutely no assembly instructions at all

Now that I got a digicam, I dare say you can expect a lot more silly stuff like this

I can sense DIrtY Harry might pop up more in future. Credit where it is due, bolding the D I Y was GadgetMaster's idea ;-)

Ah Ikea, the joy of running through the oversized shop being annoyed by all the children, finally finding that piece of {bleep} cheap furniture you never wanted in the first place but it is so cheap. And everybody else and their dog owns it too.

/me hates its!

I'm only guilty of Kilby and Malm. And a sofa. And a dinnertable + matching chairs. And cutlery. And coffeemaker.

Depressing  :-(.

@ Karlos

You see that toothpick there? The one with the splayed and mouldy tip, discarded in the dark, brooding corner of a harlot's work-place?
The one with the dubious odour of a rheumy-eyed sailor's breath, do you see that?
That's your screw-driver, that is.
That's what you use to assemble Ikea flat-packs.

See a soggy piece of string, dangling wet and flaccid from the frayed edge of a shirt sleeve? Or a corroded elastic band, incapable of maintaining any tension or force lest it breaks pitifully?

I have seen such a degraded example of old material.

That's your bicep, that is. Atrophied and weak. That's why you need an electrical screwdriver to put screws into anything. Except you can't hold it either, so you need someone to do it for you.

I only bought one flatpack item, and that was from Argos. It was a bit more involved than Karlos's shelves because it is a computer cabinet and desk. It has a sliding keyboard tray, CD slots, printer enclosure and doors on the front. I chose it because it was the only computer desk I could find that can accommodate an A4000T.
Took a long time to put together, even with instructions, and even though I had a better srewdriver than Karlos (I use a standard straight-handled Philips one  ;-) )
The doors are the {bleep}s.

I know someone who used to work in Argos.  With the stories he had I'm surprised anything bought from there actually works!

Saying that, we've had a tv, 2 computer desks and a few other things from there that are fine :-D

Well, I should point out that the shelves were nothing. It was the instructionless bed that was the problem ;-)

Anyway, I have a straight phillips screwdriver and it was unable to fully tighten the screws on that beast. I see your poxy straight one and raise your the 34 piece high torque bent-handled ratchet screwdriver that owned those puppies in seconds where even an electric screwdriver gave up :-P

@ Vinnie

I know what you mean. Argos gets a bad reputation, especially because of Chavs buying jewelry there. Now I have to admit to you that I bought a watch there, as a last resort. I needed one with dual digital and analogue display, all steel (including strap) and waterproof. You'd be surprised how difficult it is to get all those features.
In the end only Argos had what I wanted. I've had this watch for a few years now and it has worked perfectly.

The one before that was a cheap watch I bought in SA with a replacement steel strap. That was a really nice watch, very tough and went through a lot of abuse. But one fine day I was in very rough seas in Amanzimtoti and got dumped pretty badly. When I finally surfaced, coughing and spluttering, my swimming trunks were around my ankles and my watch was gone

I've never been to IKEA myself. Might just go someday to see what all the fuss is about.

A new Danish furniture shop called ILVA (http://www.ilva.co.uk/department/frontpage) has opened in Manchester. Very posh. I bet it's expensive. I am sure the wife will want to visit soon. I hate shopping.

I'm not a big shopping fan either, unless I'm looking at uber expensive Nikkor glass, fortunately the missus isn't a big shopper too :-)

Edit...Indeed they are expensive, I had a quick look at their bar stools (thats sounds awful) and they look waaaaay to arty-farty to me.

Arty Farty Bar Stools .. Sounds digusting indeed  :-x

:-P

Yes, they are bloomin' expensive too. I'm sure the £78  Koko bar stool (http://www.ilva.co.uk/department/chairs/93/bar_stools) is exactly the same as one I bought from another shop for £25.  It was just the right height for my workshop bench.

I think I have a good enough excuse to avoid the place now.   Thanks! :-D

[EDIT]

Oh!,  and to remain on topic.. Yes the stool was flat packed, beleive it or not.

Sure, but technically the hardware displayed so far have been *drills* not *screwdrivers* ;-)

Of course, you can fit screwdriver heads to them but that isn't the point. Powered tools are to DIrtY Harry what a submachine gun would be to Harry Calahan.

Hehe that guy is obviously not a guy you want to call to help you with DIY

I've not seen any nailgun injuries. In fact DIY injuries to the head, involving projectiles and such are quite rare. The only one I know of (which I missed because I was on night shift) was an angle-grinder disc that came off and embedded in a guy's forehead. He survived with little damage.

Maybe American TV Cops are all sex crazed perverts?

Maybe, but it is quite tempting as a holiday home, pick a nice unoccupied piece of land, head down to the local Ikea, pick up a house and get to work with my Allen key :-D

When building, the pullout strength of screws is superior to nails!!!!

Screws have far less shear strength compared to nails, and take longer to use. Both have there strengths and weaknesses, it just comes down to choosing the best fixing for the job, we still use oak pegs at work to hold stuff in place.

I hate Ikea, I went to their monster of a store in Wembley years ago, I had find someone who works there and ask for directions to the exit... twice

3 nails a second, and a lovely aftersmell of burnt propane :-D
And when you disable the safety mechanism, they can fire for about 100 yards, just enough to pick off a running chav.

After some googling, it's actually a promo for this show on HGTV:
Hammered with John & Jimmy DiResta  (http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/shows_hbros)
