Hi there - I'm a programmer looking for a mission! I used to own an Amiga 500 (and CD32 - gloom rocked!) and have many a fond memory of classic gaming moments over the years. I now program on PCs (shock horror!) And am thinking about re-writting an old classic Amiga game.
I'm toying with the idea of writting in Blitz Max (related to Blitz Basic on the Amiga) or possibly in Java - depending on which is faster.
Does anyone have any suggestions of a classic game they would like to see re-made? - Please list some suggestions and I'll take them into consideration.
I'm not really interested in 3D games so no Gloom suggestions or Alien Breed - I'd really like to make remake a classic 2D game as there aren't enough quality 2D games around these days. Or perhaps isometric - anyway let me know your thoughts. Thanks all and long live the Amiga!

This thread is going to be loooooooooooong :-) I'll post some ideas when I get home and can look in my Games drawer :-D

Ok ok, here are a few I've just thought of:
Nebulus
Exile
Project X
Alien Breed
Worms DC
More to follow :-)

If it doesnt have to be an amigagame, any of the Nintendo gba or psx Castlevaniagames would be a dream come through.
If not Superfrog and sensible soccer comes to mind.
In any case a new amigagame is always welcomed these days.

Hmm..
I'd love to see Advanced Laser Chess redone, with computer AI. Advanced Laser Chess was distributed as freeware with a copy of COMPUTE! way back when.
Of course, my favorite, Dungeon Master.
Maybe Breach II, a turn based strategy game for the Amiga?
As a amature game programmer, I can tell you, if this is your first project, pick a simple game without lots of hard artwork. A few unique challenges in physics or AI perhaps, but detailed pixel art or an overly complex RPG story will end first game projects at 30% done. Most of all, Pick something YOU like or you'll get bloody sick of it!
Blitz basic would be a pretty good choice. SDL and C++ I've seen is pretty easy to use for 2d games. Or .NET with DirectX is easy to develop with (the IDE is second to none, if you don't mind Windows only.)
Java I suppose, I don't know of a good graphics API, maybe someone else can fill us in?

BlitzMax is a good choice because it has compilers for Windows, MacOS X (PPC and Intel) and Linux.

Skidmarks, Sensible soccer :-)

Thanks for your comments and suggestions - keep em coming in! My thoughts on a wicked graphics API for java is to use the excellent Processing libraries produced by Ben Fry and Casey Reas - see processing web site (http://processing.org/)
This will be my first re-write, I have written some games of my own but they were on the amiga in Blitz and originally in (shudder) Amos! - I have written many desktop apps and have a web programming background - so you can expect the game to be web deliverable and have an website high score table. I work for a web design company so I'm in touch with some graphic designers I might be able to get to assist .. possibly!
Thanks all and look forward to hearing more...

a new enhanced midnight resistance would rule
also:
agony
gods
switchblade 2
flashback

You could remake these ones, too:
- Apydia
- :pint:
- Alien Breed: Tower Assault
- :pint:
- Gunship 2000
- :pint:
- hic!
- Moonstone
:pint: :pint: :pint: :pint: :pint:

Alien Breed was originally 2D. Do that.

Sort of opposite to the topic, but since we're on the subject of converting old games... I'd love to see the first 2 Duke Nukem games on Amiga (since they were designed on Amiga, but made for PC).
-
It wasn't 2D, but it was fun as hell. Stunt Car Driver.
You'd make a lot of people happy if you could make some new missions for the old FA/18 Interceptor. :-)
-
Bloodmoney of course.

Hi all - thats great - theres some real good suggestions here! I have to re-iterate no 3D please - I know there was some real classics (I loved interceptor too - who else flew down the golden gate bridge?!)
Simple is better - I'm thinking Blood Money is a great idea - or maybe Nebulus as its not too complex - or Dungeon Master (I've written this type of suedo 3D before) but I'm also interested in Flood - what do you guys think? Whatever I do it won't be an *exact* remake but just different enough to not get into too much copyright trouble ;) anyway thanks for your suggestions! Cheers all

I'm actually doing something similar, Jimbob. :-) I always enjoyed the old game "Conquest" so I downloaded the Aminet version, updated it so it was configurable and added a little color.
When I get a chance, I'll modify it further, make it object oriented, replace the old text interface with a new one, maybe compile it for AROS (if I can ever figure out how).
So far, this is been a good way to update my C/C++ skills. :)
Ed.

@jimbob1977
You can't call it Flood. You'll have to call it Sewer Tunnel Amphibious Escape or something.
