Title: F/A-18 Interceptor - Mission 6 - how to end it
Post by: sdyates on November 18, 2006, 06:54:47 PM
How does mission 6 end? How do I kill the sub? I cannot figure out how to end this mission!!!

Mission 6? Darn, I never even completed the first mission...

I just take off, fly happily around, do some stunts and then either die by being shot or because I'm out of fuel :-D

heh! I always wondered exactly the same question. I couldn't killthe darn sub! Let's hope somebody has finished this mission :)

Cheers!

I remember you had to put 3 missiles in the grey area on the sub, but there is a bug that the mission never ended....

Its famous for that, FA18. No one could ever finish the mission. Not knowing there was a bug. :-?

It's been a long time, but you need to manually aim a whole bunch of missiles - like 8 or more - into the {bleep}.

Fly out, find it, empty your warload into it, fly back to the carrier and re-arm, then repeat the process until the thing is dead.

Like I said, it's been a long time but I'm sure it's possible.

That's right you just need to re-arm.

If there is a bug, its the one that allows you to re-arm on the enemy sub.   :)

Too bad the game's source code can't be release to gnu. It would be nice to have some development done on it.

Just imagine having more maps, more missions... I love this game.

Its funny that Falcon had so many advanced features in the weapons and displays but flew like a turd, while F/A-18 Interceptor looked like WB 1.3 but had so much better
flight dynamics.

I always loved the burst of pixels with a "kill", but the
explosions in the mission where you chase the cruise
missiles looked straight out of Atari 2600 missile command.

Sorry... just feeling nostalgic for a minute

I have heard the question before, (asked it myself many years ago)...

Seems to me the answer was to keep rearming and continue hitting the sub. Did the trick with landing and rearming on the sub itself which was neat.

I never sunk the damn thing though. Kept getting target fixated and doing the kamakaze thing.
In a way I guess this has kept the game alive... damn, I think I'll try again!!!

I would love to get the source code and see how they made the flight dynamics seem so fluid on the old A500.

I don't know about the rest of you, but here's how I did it...

Drop to wavetops (~100ft/34m) and allow the enemy's planes to pass. Pull up into an Immelmann behind them, and flame the SOBs. On my copy, it was at this point that I got the "Mission Completed" message (this may be the bug).

Yes, I know that the mission is to sink the sub, but after pounding that thing for sorte after sorte and getting nowhere, I just said F- it, and took out the planes. Go figure. Although, when you think about it, why are you trying to take out that sub with only sidewinders, amraams, and a nose cannon? A single harm or maverick would be better suited. Oh, well...

And I'm another one who gives kudos to Bob Dinnerman for his work on this thing. It's still one of my favorites to fly, even moreso than Jane's F/A-18 (PC) or Falcon (any). Dynamix's A-10 and EA's Birds of Prey are close seconds, though.

The other one that was really impressive was Twin Tornado, especially when you consider it was on the C64!

F-18 Rocked!

I could never complete mission 6, although there was supposed to be a bug where you could land on the enemy sub and re-arm with enough missiles to kill it I still couldn't sink the sucker.

It was one of those rare games where it was fun just to fly around, much more so than Falcon which was arguably prettier.  The only other flight sim I played which was as much fun to just punt around in was Combat Flight Sim, as there are a multitude of downloadable planes out there to play with.

It did have some bugs though, I managed to engage reverse thrust (to a max of minus 23% engine power) at 35,000ft and got the jet to reverse climb all the way to the 40,000 ceiling backwards.

That said, landing a F-18 in the middle of a city centre is a feature which more games should have.

I always had trouble landing, so I just flew from LA to where
San Fransisco was supposed to be - but no 3D city there :(

Then I ran out of fuel...

Banxi <- you are right!

I did the same thing, took out the migs without dying and it said mission completed!

I have to differ. F/A-18 was a lot of fun, but was always a bit choppy on a 68000. I remember seeing Falcon for the first time in our local shop. While looking out of the side of the {bleep}pit and pushing to the side with the stick, the speed at which those hills rolled was something new to me. And in F/A-18 the dogfighting was more about chasing the target reticule than chasing an aircraft. In Falcon you could get in really close and watch those MiGs try to outfly you. Landing in Falcon was pretty tough too. I think the best version was the first mission disk where you were up against the MiG 29 Fulcrums. But it was always more of a sim than F/A-18 which was more about easily accessible fun IMHO.

On mission 4, what is the command to drop the lifeboat to help the downed pilot?

@Angus

Ya know, thinking back I based what I said on the way it landed- In the air Falcon wasnt all that bad- pretty impressive for the era, but close to the ground, particulary with landing I guess the scenery, aircraft, and pilots perspective with airspeed always seemed out of sync and unrealistic to me.

But F/A-18 was undoubtedly more fun than realistic. And
consistent in that regard.

A good friend of mine feels the same way, he's a big fan of Digital Integration's F16 Combat Pilot, which I never quite amnaged to get into..... yet.   :)

Like he says, the best flight-sims have their good points, I love the close up dog-fighting, (which is one reason I love Star Crusader) he loves the mission planning, night missions and general depth. Certainly F/A-18 is a very cool game (see my review on the AGDB!).  :)

Its a shame neither TFX nor Tornado were RTG.  :(

Somebody PLEASE turn off this ridiculous sensor-thingie,
I mean, what's wrong with a c.o.c.k.pit?

I wonder what Charles Dickens would think of this...

In the Amiga Falcon there was something wrong with the scale and sizes and speed of things. E.g. Extremely high telephone poles etc.

Especially in the mission disk version, the speed of how things "ran" in the simulation changed depending how many objects it had to draw. Very fast if blank sky was visible, but slow when looking towards ground objects.

Anyone else notice when running F-18 on anything other than a 68000 that your plane's fuel consumption increases?

Are you using the WHDLoad version? I know Jean-François Fabre put in a lot of work so the install ran properly on the 060 etc, and gave a correspondingly smoother framerate.

Marvelous job I thought.

Oooh, I'll have to check that out - my first proper Amiga game and always one of my favorites.

The Sub mission - all you have to do is down the Migs... It was a bit of a let down to me as well! At least you could re-arm on the sub and have a bit of a rest ;-)
