Title: Amiga 600
Post by: Amiga1k on November 01, 2006, 08:30:43 PM
I have offered to buy an Amiga 600 from a user on AmigaWorld, and I need so advice.  The system is an Amiga 600 (not towerized) has the following:

5" LCD Screen (?)
Clockport adapter
Internal DVD-ROM (not connected)
3.1 ROMs

However, there are some things that would need to be done:

1. Needs recoating with matte clear coat paint
2. Case doesn't close
3. Half the keyboard doesn't work.

The explanations for the above are as follows:

1. So that the key stickers stay on and the paint stays protected.

2. Self explanatory

3. In what way do you suppose?

4. A 'membrane'...from what type of keyboard?

As for (4) above, I have the following questions:

1) Could I use a membrane from any ol' keyboard? Or does it have to be from:

   a) one of of those USB Belkin 'classic' ones
   b) a particular style
   c) ...

2) The paint job that needs to be done.

The PM that I received mentiona what to do, but then mentions a 'professional' paint job.  Who should I use?  Is Sherwin Williams my 'friend' in this case?  Who should I hire?

The user goes by the nickname of 'scala47', and has a website, scala.com.  BTW, it is highly unusual for an indivual to register a personal page under the '.com' namespace.

However, it is 99% unlikely that it is a hoax. :-P :-)

The person is selling it for $250.  (all the hard work...)

Sounds like Leirbag's A600. I think that's a lot of work when you're paying $250 for the A600.....

A lot of work...yes :-)

Does anyone have a picture of an an A600 keyboard's membrame for comparision?

Could anyone give me any insight into what keyboards I should use?  As I said, what type of keyboard layout does the A600 use?  Once I know, I'll be able to buy the right keyboard, knowing it has the right membrane, correct?

EDIT: 'crack'?  I'm not cracked.  :-P

250 is alot of $ for a system that needs work.

btw, having a .com namespace isnt unusual.  Mine is BartonekDragRacing.com

I did like the look of that amiga. But i think 250$ is a tad too high unless it comes with some accelerator or something that you havent mentioned.

Remember that Steve Jobs also wants it! That would really up the price;-)

I'd replace the whole keyboard and just swap the keys over.

I just bought a MASplayer from leirbag28.  He wanted payment via Western Union.  I was initially uncomfortable with this sinse I didn't know him, but, I took a chance.  He shipped the next business day by express carrier (forget which).  He included extra software and cables.  We exchange E-mails from time to time.  He's a good guy from my experience.

never heard complaints from people dealing with leirbag. I don't think it's a hoax either. but the price is little bit steep I would say.

the keyboard problem probably is about the membrane wearing out. you can get a replacement a600 keyboard from ebay, but it'll cost you, and it will wear out in time too, if you plug it in and out often. I can recommend you to build mmkeyboard (http://www.geit.de/eng_mmkeyboard.html) interface so that you can use any ps2/usb keyboard with your a600, which connects to the keyboard controller with a pllc socket so a definite solution to the membrane problem. however it may be hard to find a keyboard which will fit into the a600 case.

Wow, painting is wonderfull. But if the keyboard don't work that is a very expensive A600.

To replace the keyboard are just 3 ways:

- Buying a dead A600 to use the keyboard;

- Use an Aminet hack, using a big case Amiga one

- Buying a Lyra from Individual Computers or keyboard from Elbox.

You will need a membrane from A600 keyboard. No other will do.

DO NOT waste $250 on this half arsed machine.

Just buy a good standard A600 and any modification do yourself.

$250 is a rip off for this crappy machine WITH A BROKEN KEYBOARD!

I upgraded my A600 with internal cdrom, clockport, 1gb cf HD, CF reader and ide buffer for A LOT LESS than $250.
