Title: A1000 daughter board - a simple question
Post by: McVenco on October 31, 2006, 09:42:38 PM
What does the daughter board in the A1000 do? I opened up my recently acquired A1000 and found this daughterboard (http://amigahardware.mariomisic.de/download_photos/a1000_6_big.jpg). My other A1000 didn't have it.

Is it extra memory? (I haven't hooked the A1000 up yet, so I haven't checked it in WB)

Where is this board plugged?

Probably you'll find it in TBBoAH. :-)

The board is plugged on top of the mobo, connected with a lot of thin copper sticks. And the picture IS from TBBOAH :-D

It might be extra memory.  I used to have an A1000 and the RAM expansion was in a hatch at the front of the A1000 case if I remember rightly.

On the picture you can't see all the chips clearly, but the chips that I can see the numbers on are just garden variety 74LS series chips, so I'm not so sure it's a RAM board.

If it is a RAM expansion, then it's likely only the 8 chips in the bottom right hand corner of the board are RAM chips and probably only 256K at a guess.

I'd say that board could have other functions beside RAM.

But hey, I could be wrong.  wouldn't be the first time :-))

Isn't this the WOM board?  The RAM memory where floppy-based Kickstart is loaded?

I thought it was a whole lot of logic glue chips that later went on the motherboard and then on A500/2000 into Gary.

Yep - the A1000 has no Gary, and the small daughterboard is its equivalent.

My A1000 also has a further daughterboard containing a RAM upgrade (as far as I remember this plugs into the 68K socket, amongst other things - it's been a while since I've had the case open), and a 256Kb expansion that plugs into the front expansion port.

Take a look at the lower right hand side of that pic - the 8 414C64 chips form the Kickstart WOM.

The A1000 daughterboard appeared on an North American units.
It supplied the Kickstart RAM write Area and had the preliminary Kickstart Boot PAL logic which the Insert Kickstart Boot Disk Screen.

If you installed a Rejuvinator (from Expert Systems) board then this board was removed. Some other Kickstart Boards for the A1000 may have also done this.

Apparently it appeared on European units as well, since this one was bought new in Holland.
