Title: Hello and help!
Post by: AmigaSev on October 25, 2006, 01:06:58 AM
Hello,
My name is Sev, I'm from Newcastle upon Tyne and I've just bought an Amiga CD32 from an online auction and found it has no joypad or instructions.
Can anyone help me?
Can I use any serial type joystick for the mo until I can find a genuine one?
When I put a cd in the CD32, nothing happens. It just stays on the start screen (spinning cd in space effect) do I need to have a joypad to press a button for it to load or is it knackered??
Sorry to have my first post as a 'begging letter' but I hope thats what we are all here for!!!
Hope to hear from some fellow retro gamers soon!
Kindest regards,
Sev.

Hmm, I assume it's a bootable game CD?

Welcome!

Most CD32 titles require the function buttons on the CD32 pad.  Here is the link for an official Amiga CD32 joypad:

http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=323

We have a few copies of the CD32 manual so if you need the joypad we can put in a copy of the manual if requested.

To test the CD32- put a regular audio CD into the drive.  It should display the CD player.  This is a good way of testing the CD if you don't have any CD32 titles.

Hi Guru Meditator!
I imagine so, its a genuine Amiga CD32 game (ICE's Mean Arenas - one of my fav games back in my Amiga 1200 days, I wish I'd never parted with that!)
Thanks for the reply!
Sev

Hi Guru Meditator! How daft am I!?
Hi Karlos!!!! (and thanks for your time!)

Hi,
Thanks for the welcome and the advice, I'll try it out with an audio Cd in the morning (on my way to bed after a late shift!)
I'll also take up your offer on the joypad and an instruction booklet in the morning too thanks!
Speak to you soon, and thanks again!

You can try any old-style joystick as designed for the Atari-compatible 9-pin D-type socket standard (which looks like a PC's serial port), but you'll find that the CD32 will rely on its joypad's extra buttons for some functions and you'll not be able to select these with a standard joystick as this effectively only has a single fire/select button.

EDIT: and welcome to A.Org!!!

Hi Ali!
Thanks for the reply and the welcome!
I knew there was a proper name for that type of connector (9-pin D-type)!
I'm going to order a CD32 joypad from Amigakit in the morning!
Thanks again.

Welcome to Amiga.org! Well, I just did a test with my CD32,
games wil not boot unless a joypad is connected. Just tried
it with James Pond 2....Strange, had a CD32 for years and never
noticed this before. Try an audio CD, you should get the CD player
interface after a few seconds even without a contoller attached.
Hope this helps.

Hi Marc, thanks for the welcome and the advice.
I've tried an audio cd in and still no joy, looks like I bagged a stinker!
But at least we now know you can't boot a game without a joypad - something new every day as 'they' say!
Regards,
Sev

There's a guy here called leirbag28 who as far as I know is big into using CD32. Maybe edit the title of your first post to mention the CD32 and he'll doubtless pop in.

I've never owned one myself so I can't really help.

Strange I just tried 5 games without the joypad and they all boot fine!

Hi everyone!
I've been in touch with the guy who sold me the above mentioned CD32 and he's going to have it collected from me and a new one sent out, all at his expense! A big thumbs up to him, and to all of you who have welcomed me and given advice and support!
Kindest regards,
(You people really are tops!)
Sev.

Hey Sev, Glad to hear you're getting a replacement CD32. Hope it works out OK for you. CD32's can be problematic at times, I have to take mine apart and lube the metal rod that the laser assemby rides on as well as other bits, at least once per year...yet I know people who have zero problems with thiers. Anyway, best of luck....CD32's are nice machines, very underrated IMHO.

Thanks Marc.
I may need an idiot proof instruction guide to do that to mine if need be, so maybe you could start work on designing one for me! But make it REAL EASY to follow! Heehee!
I'm looking forward to getting a working model, the most frustrating thing is, I ordered a joy pad from Amigakit.com (Superb service!) and its sitting in front of me as I type this with no console to plug it into!!!! :boohoo:
Anyway, it will all come out in the wash as 'they' say!
Thanks for your time and I hope we'll speak soon and often.
Kindest regards,
Sev.

Hi.
I just have to say the service I have received from the guys at Amigakit.com was awesome! I swear I had only just hit enter to complete the order when it was on the doorstep!!
Well not quite THAT fast, but honestly under 24hrs from order to delivery!
Absolutely, most defiantly my top recommendation to anyone for customer satisfaction and tip top products.
Thanks guys!
Sev.

PS Joking apart, to anyone other than Amigakit.com staff reading this, I ordered an Amiga CD32 joy pad at midday on Wednesday and it arrived at 10am today (Thursday) they were also kind enough to send me an instruction booklet for the console (free of charge) as I’d mentioned I had bought a second hand unit that had arrived with no joy pad or instructions. Like I said VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Sev.

Belated welcome to a.org =). Sadly I've never owned a CD32 so I won't be much help to you. And anyways, everybody knows CDTVs are better  :-P.

Thanks for the welcome Odin!
I've never had a CD32 either (until now, and in fact still don't have a working one!!) I started out with a good old Amiga 500+ then swiftly moved on to a 1200. I've always regreted selling the 1200 (like from the day I did it until the day I die most likely!) but noticed a lot of my fav 1200 games are available on the CD32, so I thought 'what the hell!' it's a 1200 without the bulk just about!
Hopefully I'm going to be sorted by the beginning of next week with a working model, so I'll let you know what I think of em!
As for the CDTV, I had the Philips CDI when they launched!
Regards,
Sev.
