Title: Installing 3.9Workbench
Post by: MickTheLip on October 08, 2006, 12:57:30 AM
Hi I've got a problem when installing 3.9 over 3.1!!!I make the boot disk but it hangs with the error can't find my CD Rom and then another error says insert the 3.9 CD in any drive.I'm using the power flyer interface which works fine for 3.1 but for some reason the boot disk is unable to access this to enable the CD Rom.Any ideas or pointers as to the way to go much appreciated

in the emergency disk must been presented the power flyer files so amiga can use it while booting. never had a power flyer so i can't tell you which are these files. i hope you will find some help from Gregs aos3.9 faq (http://www.gregdonner.org/os39faq/os39faq.html)

-edit-
welcome aboard :-)

I recommend you to get the latest drivers from Elbox if you intend to use the power flyer under os3.9. I had a terrible headache trying to get os3.9 to work with the old PowerFlyer drivers (it didn´t work out very well, even if I used the skipromupdates after the setpatch command).

BTW, if it hangs during install make sure your cd drive is connected as a slave to the boot disk (device 1) or else WB will most likely not be able to find it. Also, don´t use the drivers when installing...

Thanks for that information.I'll move my drives around to see if that helps! Not sure what you mean by don't use the drivers though!Do you mean the Power Flyer drivers or what?

Well I tried most things suggested but crashed the HDD and the whole thing went into meltdown.I've broken HDD completely by the looks of it!!!I've reinstalled different HDDs as I wanted slightly bigger ones.So I'm back to the begining.Obviously 3.9 Workbench is not a click and install job but as a complete learner I'd really appreciate very detailed help!!!!ie.A-Z of how to get 3.9 installed or would I be better just leaving my workbench at 3.5 which I now have installed but just have to find any updates for.

workbench 3.5 boing bags (http://os.amigaworld.de/index.php?lang=en&page=18)
for me all the workbench versions was a ''click and install job'' so i believe that your power flyer is the problem and not the workbench cd.

Once again someone points out the Power Flyer as the problem is this unsurmountable and if so what interface works straight out of the box so to speke?

i have no idea but why don't you try first without any kind of extra ide interface to test if the amiga works fine? just set hd as master, cdrom as slave and plug them at the same cable. you only need a 2.5 to 3.5 converter.

So get rid of the power flyer and replace with 2.5 to 3.5 adapter! This is going to be fun as I'll have to strip out the Zorro IV board etc. to get at it.My Amiga is working OK as I've got 3 HDDs and a CD Rom running off the power flyer even with just the basic 3.1 and then basic 3.5 Workbench running on it.I'm virtually a newbie with the Amiga so I'm really looking for someone to talk me through the procedure step by step.Hopefully without having to strip my system apart as I'd prefer to keep the system set up as is except for the inclusion of a CD Writer in place of one of my HDDs.Basically if it ain't point and click then I'm stuck I'm that ignorant of the Amiga.

If you've got OS 3.5 up and running, there should be no difficulty in getting OS 3.9 up, too. Just install it as an upgrade on top of the 3.5 installation. The emergency disk is only needed if you don't have one of the "new" OSes already or if you want to install from scratcxh (after a HDD crash for example).

To use the emergency disk, make sure everything needed to access the CD-ROM drive is copied to the disk. The emergency disk does nothing else but load the CD-ROM drivers and then boot OS 3.9 from the CD.

BTW, you should have created an emergency disk for OS 3.5, either.

Bye,
Thomas

I've tried installing 3.9 over 3.1 and 3.5 but had no luck at all.Unfortunately I have varying degrees of failure.3.5 seems to be stable even after installing Boing Bags but the minute I try and install 3.9 it boots to grey screen and that's it!Moving the CD drive to primary slave has made no difference when I've got it to boot into 3.9 it still can't find it.When I try opening draws it either fails miserably or says it can't access library XYZ or what ever. Now also git another problem. While moving the drives around the wires to the phono plugs on the back of the power tower came adrift!!!Anybody able to tell me where they fit back onto on the motherboard or possibly an added board as I havnot got a clue as to where they connected to except that they were not connected to the CD drive.

Isnt there a folder in os3.5/os3.9 that can cause problems if in devs. think its "os rom updates" or something. I remember when i first upgraded to 3.5 I had problems when my accelerator was plugged in and the AmigaOS FAQs told me I had to move/rename this folder.
Someone else is more likely to know about this for definate

Thanks to all those who offered suggestions on how to install Workbench 3.9.It turned out that it was the CDRom itself was to blame for all problems.I took advantage of this and replaced with a CD Writer which so far has behaved impeccably. Now just need the info to replace those sounleads back onto the power tower motherboard/addon board
