Title: About time...
Post by: shillard on October 06, 2006, 12:15:35 PM
Yup, using a computer is finally fun again....

1984: C-64
1987: A500
1993: A1200
1994: A4000

1997: The dark ages begin with a P166MMX.....

Dusted off the A4000 recently to find the dreaded battery problem, so I picked up a few units in better shape on Ebay.  Project is to acquire a Cyberstorm, Network card, USB card, plug it into my broadband router and ditch this Windows rubbish at home.

By Christ it was good to hear that intro tune of F/A-18 Interceptor again...

Howsit dude....

My ex girlfriend is from Newcastle. She would take control of my A4KT and play Maniacball all the time. Wasn't Newcastle a big steel-working town at one time?

Always people say they hate PCs yet we all use them and to some extent we would be lost without them. It's just not possible to have just an Amiga these days? I would be a lot more grumpy without my divx speciality movies on my laptop certainly   Still no PC or Mac manages to capture that Amiga quality.

Thants because we have NO Choice!  there is No Amiga which is up to date with all the software and hardware we need..... Most of us Hardcore Amigans only use them because we have no choice and neither does the world............Yes there is Linux and MacOS..........but PC's are marketed with WindowsXP wayyyyy more.

I have been switching to Ubuntu Linux because Im sick sick sick of Windows........and Im not just saying that because I am an Amiga user.  WindowsXP was massively improved and more of a pleasure to use..but it still sucks!
thats the one I got fed up with! WindowsXP.

Unfortunately Linux Will NEVER gain alot of ground NEVER! the simple reason being that the programmers DO NOT undertsand a simple concept:   Not everyone knows UNIX! nor are they interested in being forced to use super strange commands or the shell to accomplish something. Even their "DownLoad Wizardz" are hard as hell to use. Even on the super simple Ubuntu.

Nobody is interested in the fact that  Ubuntu ccannot come with MP3 and DVD codecs as standard (stupendously ridiculous).  its like that stupid Gif copyright crap that was going on a few years ago.

I like Ubuntu.........but it, and Linux will always be underground unless there arises ONE main and Mainstream Linux, that is easy in every way to use and is Free!  I thought RedHat would have pulled it off, but nope.

The world is BEGGING for a NEW OS standard.....and if Amiga would wake up.....there is Millions to be made..........the formula is so easy:

New Mainstream Amigas (Has to be made by Amiga INC.)
New AmigaOS  (has to be made by Amiga Inc by the same hardware team)

if this does not happen...........Amiga will NEVER gain ground......Even if AmigaOS went x86...........it will only gain hobbyist status like linux at the Most.

Amigas need to be made and sold and Advertised.........and the Claims in the adverts have to match the specs of the Machines.

No, not all. I have a PowerMac G5Dual at work + an Amiga,
and lots of Amigas at home. Although, I don't watch movies.

Yes I agree with you. We have no choice. You have to live in the world with other people and other people use Windows. I have Ubuntu as well and its clever and I like the philosophy but its not mainstream. The sad fact is most people want a computer to be like a microwave or other consumer good, they just want it to work with minimum effort. And I agree to some extent..life is very short. I think the Amiga will always remain an early 90s phenomenon. The nextgen machines or Amiga OS taking on Windows...who they tryin kid. It will never take off. Sorry if that sounds cynical

What you don't understand (similar to M$ btw) is the difference between the OS and its applications. And knowing Unix or not is just a question of what you started with. There are people out there who don't know a {bleep} about Windows, yet they're Unix experts because it was the first thing they used.

If you're not interested in licenses, patents, intellectual property and its impact on society, then really Linux is probably the wrong thing for you. You'll never understand it.

Windows claims to do that, but it really doesn't, and I doubt it ever will. It just hides the problems from the user behind a fancy surface, making it hard to troubleshoot anything if something goes wrong. It will continue to leave people with their systems being infected or compromised, their data being stolen, and the "fun" of periodical reinstalling. My bet is that it will get even worse with Vista, because Vista is trying to take away even more control from the user.

We have no real option other then to use Windowz but the Amiga has not died even if some think it has. This community keeps the tredition going as it should :-D
Micro$oft has the market in a strangelhold and now with Windowz Vista coming out soon (at $300) we will soon be forced to upgrade again.

You might be surprised with Ubuntu's market share in the future.  I think it will just be a matter of getting people started with linux and then they'll see Windows as the alien OS.

I've got family memebers started with it and it is all they know.  It is great throwing together a box and not having to spend big $$$ on the OS for them.

Now if AmigaOS ran on x86........

Most are forced to use the Windows platform for business - it is entrenched now.  To most people, computer = windows.  The entire market is a simple consumer commodity, and that is not about to change.

Fantasies of an Amiga resurrection, Linux coup, etc are just that - fantasies.  Ain't gonna happen.  The corporate world runs on Windows, and society will therefore demand that the education system runs on windows, and that homes run on windows.

Spare me the "but Macs have x% market share", because it's never going to be on the right side of 50%.  Ever.

Sure, I like the fact that my HP Centrino work machine can run for 6 hours sans mains power, and lets me watch 4 episodes of Galactica on a Sydney-Perth flight, but when it comes to mucking about at home, only the Amiga makes it fun.  It's a boutique hobby - just like shooting black powder weapons, using a 35mm SLR, building model steam trains, or running a ham radio setup.

Mind you, it's a bit less nerdy than the latter two examples....

Thanks for the welcome, Gents.

And yup - Newcastle (neither new, nor in posession of a castle) was once a steel manufacturing powerhouse.

It got out of steel, I got out of consumer electronics, and both the region and I now specialise in wine - a far sexier product!

Nearly everything you need comes with a gui these days. And the commands are no more strange than the commands in cmd.exe in windows. I find the console of linux much more userfriendly than the cmd prompt in windows or dos, but no one forces you to use it.

I really wonder what your issue is with the download/package manager, as i find it easier to install ubuntu packages than installing windows software on windows. You have three choices, one is to use the graphical download manager where you basicly search for the software needed and just select it and press install. You can also install it under console/terminal with these easy to remember commands: apt-cache search firefox will gie you results related to the browser firefox. apt-get install firefox will actually install it for you and even install the depedencies needed. Is this hard? Then you have the third option of downloading the ubuntu package manually and then just clicking/double clicking it to make it install through the package manager.

You can also make it update all your packages by performing these simple commands: apt-get update and then apt-get upgrade.

In windows on the other hand you will have to first download an exe and then double click the file, which is exactly the same process as with the third option on ubuntu and also the slowest method.

This is because ubuntu is free. If you want linux with mp3/dvd support, then you buy one of the commerical distros like mandriva or suse. You can also simply get mp3 support by editing a couple of lines in package manager conf file"apt.source" by adding universe and multiverse which tells it to include non free stuff like mp3 codecs and such.

Linux has one problem though and that is lack of common standards between distros. A package for redhat will for example not install easily on for example ubuntu or vice versa. If there was just one distro, then it would be easier to install software on linux than on windows.

When OS4.0 comes out, we all need to supprt and buy it and start showing our friends again like those years before.

There appears to be several hardware platforms to run OS4.0, hopefully the cost won't be crazy and there will be divx support.

I have shown a few friends my beefed up A3000, without a processor accelerator and they are amazed at what it can do still, a computer some 17 years old!

If we get a hardware and software platform beofre Christmas, then I think it can do well, but we all must be willing to shell out the money if we trully want to see it move forward and not just complain, ponder the past and wish we had something. I can promise you it won't be everything to everyone, nothing ever is. But this may be our last chance...

Oh well, at least we'll all have plenty of time to save up.

Open an account today - over a couple of centuries, compound interest can work wonders.....

I disagree. In fact, things are finally changing - at least from what I can tell here in Germany. Companies as well as officials are fed up with being dependent on the mood of one single company. Linux could be found on the server for a long time, but there are more and more desktop installations on business and also government PCs. Best example is the city of Munich (http://www.desktoplinux.com/news/NS7137390752.html).

Dude, one locust doesn't make a swarm.

Next some Mac enthusiast will post a link showing how his local high school or university has switched from Windows to Mac - big deal.

Take a look at the top 500 global companies, and see how many run Mac, Linux or some other non-MS platform on their desktop PCs.

My guess is you won't need to take your shoes off to count them all.

Operating systems are a commodity, and commodity markets are dominated by those with the strength in distribution channels, the marketing clout to dominate, and the consumer recognition.

Windows is to computers as iPod is to MP3 players.  Creative, BenQ, etc might make MP3 players that walk all over the iPod, but they're never going to get 85% market share.

Game over.

Err..... I think you should know Munich, even if you're from down under.

I'm not talking about consumers. We all know that they're stupid (that makes them buy the iPod instead of a better player, nice example.) I'm talking about companies and governments and thus about political decisions. And btw, I guess the ftp sites of the various Linux distors are amongst the strongest distribution channels you'll find.  ;-)

For every user of a Linux download channel, there are a hundred thousand bozos who just want to download porn and next week's episode of LOST off the net.

They drive the market - not the likes of thee and me.
