After spending a few days looking at what G3 Macs were doing and re-evaluating my software, I ordered my G4 Amiga One yesterday.
Ain't no fool like an old fool.....
-
A G4 based amiga? Your'e no fool. I wish I had one!
-
@Karlos
I hear ya there.
-
..or even two :-D
-edit-
Calen, love that avatar mate :-)
-
ta :-)
Just be careful, it really is sharp ;-)
-
@Marky_D_Sahd,
Off topic, just what is that smokey wisp infront of you in your avatar?
(at least I assume its you!)
Is there a nice, big cuban stokey just out of sight at the bottom? :-)
-edit-
I just had the awful thought that somewhere out there there's a similar picture of Monica Lewinsky....
-
Good choice!
The G3-xe is nice too, easier to overclock
iv'e heard. A guy on the mailing list is
clocking his at 933, and it's rock solid.
But this one (G4) is sharp enough!
:-D

Be careful when choosing memory though,
they are a bit picky. I use Crucial256, reg, 2cl
and never had any problems but double check
before you buy...
-
I'm still waiting from november so you make a good
choise.
I am so exited when it comes to holland :-D :-D
and playng for the whole vakation 8-) 8-)

I never heart of crucial, why is there a diffrence on memory?
-
I wish I could answer that question :-)
With some memory you can't run the FSB
at full speed, and with some nothing works,
It's not much of a problem if you are aware
of it before you buy memory though, just
check the compatibility list.

Ooooh i get it finally i always wondered if you mst take a hard lesson or just look at its specs.
(i think I just first look before I buy thats for sure)
:-o :-o the world is gonna open to me :-o :-o

;-) Congratulations, sir. Enjoy!

I should have my a1 soon as eyetech have cashed the check never had no problems with the before.
with regards to memory they have updated the firmware so you can use any normal sdram and dont have to have to have the ecc registered sd ram.
-
@Marky_D_Sahd
Good on ya Marky :-) . I too faced the Mac vs AmigaOne decision, finally settling for the A1.
Remember there is always MaconLinux ;-) .

Don't know if you ever heard of Micron memory. But Micron just renamed its RAM (producing) division Crucial (http://www.crucial.com/).
-
Fool??? :-?
No, you'd be a fool to go for the Mac :-D Hopefuly I'll be joining you in that decision soon (maybe not the G4 though).

No, you can't use any sdram, the updated firmware
gives you more options though...
-
I'll join you after AmigaOS4 is released, at that time I'll buy the fastest AmigaOne available. Can't bring myself to buy a machine with an unreleased OS though.

I'll have to wait a bit longer myself. But Doug has his AmigaOne already setup, and I think he is planning to bring it to our first group meeting.

No such luck, I'm afraid (either with the stogie or Ms. Lewinski). It's just a lens flare caused by the student photographeraiming the camera into the sun.
And while we're on the subject, just what is that thing in your hand in your avatar??
-
I wasn't really considering buying a mac, just noting that the same "Old, outdated" CPU used by the AmigaOne is the same one used in the newest, coolest Macs. I know it's not the future for either maching, but it's the present for both, meaning that it's not as out-of-date as I had been believing.
And yes, there is always MacOS On Linux. But is there anybody out there who REALLY believes that Hyperion WON'T deliver OS4? Maybe late, but I mean, not at all?
Still too much bob, though. And I hope the developers are still waiting...(Great news on Frogger, today. And Ibrowse development continues. And Hollywood. And it's not as bad as I was thinking, either.)
Thanks, all! :-D

I certainly could see a possibility of OS4 croaking in the crib. I don't know how probable it is, but the possibility exists.

@Dammy
Hyperion have an income coming in developing other stuff besides OS 4.0... ongoing work for MAI for example.
-
I agree, money wouldn't be an issue. It's not like they are betting their livelyhood on OS4.

great,
tell us how it goes!
signed,

Good decision, Congratulations :-)

A safety harness :-) The picture was one of those blurry pixellated shots you get taken automatically at theme parks when youre on thre ride (this one shortly before being inverted and soaked with water). I just added some hue to the image and put in the burning background effect because it looked good whilst I was playing with it :-D
On topic, have fun with the G4..Man, I am envy personified :-D
-
Nuts. Looks like I might have to wait. A1-G4's are sold out and on back order. Eyetech has no more in stock, which makes me ask this musical question: How many boards were manufactured in the original run? 500? No wonder they're so expensive! 2500? But if the first run Pegasos boards ALSO sold out, isn't that a lot of freaky people lobbing out cash for they're Amiga fix? And how bout those people who are waiting for OS4 before making their purchase? How many of us are there still in or just on the edge of the community who are willing to take this plunge??
-
... And yes, I am including BOTH camps AND the G3 board crowd. Does anybody know the number of either board produced or sold? (Also, on the side, how many CURRENT PPC owners are looking forward to OS4? There may still be some sales in hee, yet! (Hey, developers! Lookie here!)
-
Beware of thinking that you can use "any" memory just because the board is a bit less _picky_ about what un-registered modules will work. My module didn't work any better, yet I've found non-reg modules that worked just fine. But I've bought half a gig of registered memory now, so it's no biggie :-)
Anyway, there was a problem with Kingston using two types of chips on the same part number memory, one worked, the other didn't. Now Kingston are trying to figure out why, and in the meantime anyone who buys Kingston (recommended part number, I don't remember it now) and find themselves with Toshiba chips can just have Kingston send them another module. Kingston are really nice when it comes to support, I must say...
-
very interesting...
i wonder if my amigaone (if I have one) can fit up 2GB of memory..
Is that possible? or do I have to put 2*512=1GB
I want a lot of memory because I operate almost everything on memory.
