Title: Charr
Post by: bertambala on September 15, 2006, 08:21:02 PM
Hello everyone,

I love the artillery game Charr (Aminet (http://www.aminet.net/package.php?package=game/shoot/Charr100.lha))
but ever since I got a Picasso IV for my 4000D (25 MHz 68040, 3.1 ROMs with 3.9 + BB2), I can't play it anymore.  The program itself seems to run fine (music starts, etc), but the screen never switches away from workbench.

I don't have problems with any other software, and I'm fairly certain the game does not use DLBNTSC or DBLPAL.  Any ideas on why it would fail to work now?  Would it be possible to use WHDLoad to fix the game?  Thanks!

I've had similar problems since I upgraded my stock A1200 with a Blizzard 1230.  I don't know what the problem is becuase Charr is supposed to have a rotating logo on the title screen that requires an '030+ and I've never seen what it looks like.

Might be worth installing ModePro or NewMode to see if its trying to use some weird screen for some reason.

SamuraiCrow:  The logo itself is kinda cool I guess - it's a wireframe version of the word Charr.  It spins around, splits apart, and reassembles itself.  I've been able to view it on both my 3000 (25 MHz '030) and on my 4000.  Odd that it wouldn't work for you.

Angus:  I was thinking about it some more, and I'm almost positive that it's a standard 320x200 NTSC screen, because I played the game for years on my 3000, and also on my 4000 with an external scandoubler - neither of which have support for DBL modes if I'm not mistaken.  That said I'll try those programs out.

As a test I powered up the Amiga with the external scandoubler attached, but with the monitor hooked up to the PIV.  I launched charr and got the same behavior, but when I switched the monitor cable to the SD/FF I was able to play the game.  So now I know that the game is in fact working, it's just not displaying on the PIV for some reason.

One possibility is to try the fakenative mode on PicassoIV; I got 30-40% of my games to work on PicassoIV with it - read the P96 docs.

Thanks Zipper, I'll give that a try.  I'm very much a PIV newbie so I appreciate the guidance.
