Title: Getting games onto HDD
Post by: RAFJamie on September 13, 2006, 07:04:52 PM
Ok i'll admit it I'm a biff lol. I've recently bought an A1200 to which I've fitted a HDD and managed to aquire a PMCIA CD Drive for. Now as i didn't have a HDD in my amiga many eons ago, I'm unsure as to how to transfer games onto and boot from said HDD. Also after fitting my HDD i'm unable to play games via the floppy drives. All it does is display a disk icon on the workbench desktop and wont entertain doing anything. Thanks in advance for the help which I'm sure will be incoming . And yes I know I'm a biff lol  :-?  :-?  :-?

OK we need a bit more information.

You have 2.5"HD connected to 1200 internally? Did you format it and install Workbench to it?

You say the games don't work anymore from the floppy drive. did you boot from the floppy drive or do you insert the disk from Workbench?

If you want to boot from the floppy, you have to either put the disk in before turning the machine on, or put the disk in then reboot.

You can download a package called WHDLoad to install your floppy games to your hard drive. You could burn the files to CD on your PC and copy them off the CD on your A1200.

welcome aboard RAFJamie :-)
most of floppy games in amiga are made in a way to boot with the floppy and play the game. mostly for copyright reasons the companies made them not to been installable in a hdd. there is a trick in the later years for this and it's name is WHDLoad (http://se.aminet.net/dev/misc/WHDLoad_usr.lha) but more tips for this from other users as personaly i'm not  using it.

Thanks for the speedy replies. to clarify the HDD came preinstalled with workbench 3.1 although the A1200 still only has 3.0 roms. (3.1 ROMS ordered) I have tried inserting the floppy disks in and rebooting, however the A1200 just goes straight to workbench. also would i be correct in assuming that the addition of the 3.1 ROMS will enable the CD-rom to become visible? Is there any other way? Again thanks for the replies

in general aminet (http://aminet.net/) will help you to find a lot of usefull amiga stuff and use. to be able to use the cd you must install a CD DosDrive in directory Devs/DosDrivers. download amicdfs (http://de4.aminet.net/disk/cdrom/amicdfs240.lha) read the docs carefully and try an installation. for any problem if something goes wrong, please call :-)

-edit-
in a normal situation the pcmcia cd you get must have a floppy with a specific pcmcia driver called xxxx.device. do you have the floppy?

Regarding the flopies, when you get to the workbench screen do they show up as game icons or a folder that you can open?

WHLoad is a great program but the flopies MUST be the original not copies. all you do once WHLoad is installed is get the WHLoad file of the game from the website and run the program and it will ask for the disk. More details on the site posed in the post above.

With regards to the floppy i just get a standard disk icon with NDOS written below it. When I attempt to double click it it comes up with the caption this Icon has no default tool. Any ideas?

the floppy is not formated or it is an amiga bootable game :-)

Its an Amiga bootable game. Original copy of sensible soccer unfortunately it still reverts to the workbench screen even when the machine is rebooted with the disk in the drive. I'm perplexed as to why

Does the disk not even start loading when you reset the Amiga? Could be that the harddisk has a higher boot priority than the floppy drive.

You can check this by holding the two mouse buttons when you reset. You'll get to the early startup menu; check under boot options. The highest number will boot first! You can override this by choosing a device in the list on the left and clicking Use and then Boot.

3.1 roms won't give you cd-rom ability. You need a cd-filesystem; see above. Drivers for your pcmcia cd-rom may be found at amiga.resource.cx However you still need to find a way to get the files to your Amiga... You need an Amiga or PC with internet connection and floppy. Amigas can read 720k floppies.

Try pressing/holding both mouse buttons in while you turn on the machine. This should bring up a menu where you can disable the HD or select df0 as a boot device. Pressing df0 should force the a1200 to boot from the floppy disk instead of the HD. If this dosent work, then you might also want to disable the hd "dh0"

Orginal games showing up as ndos in WB is entirely normal.

Oh and no need for 3.1 roms for cdrom. What you need to do is to install some cdrom drivers. You should be able to find some free ones on aminet.

Was the HD on a higher priority? You can change that with HDToolBox in WorkBench.

The floppy priority is fixed as far as I know.
