Title: Opalvision versus cybergraphics 64 (vga in and out)
Post by: sdyates on September 12, 2006, 06:01:13 PM
Ok, I know they are different cards, but which one would you consider the most useful?

Is it possible to cycle standard Amiga video through the Opal card?

(http://www.amiga.org/images/subject/icon9.gif) To my knowlege. there is no way promote the Amiga's Workbench screen to the OpalVison card.  Only applictions written for it will run on it.  There may be newer tools on Aminet that I'm unaware of, though.  Check them out, if you like.

;-) CyberGraphix is the way to go, if you're looking to promote Workbench and applictions to 24-bit screen modes.  There are utilities on Aminet that will promote older applications to custom screen modes, too.

OpalVision is not an RTG card!

CV64 would be a lot more useful!

Hmm... now that I reread the thread, I see that he doesn't mention a different card than OpalVision. I thought he meant the CyberVision 64.

Sticking to the original question: the Opalvision card sits in an A2000-style video slot like a Microway flickerfixer or Video Toaster (it should also work in the A3000/A4000(T)).  It simply passes through the original Amiga graphics modes for Workbench, etc. at 15kHz so you need to use a 1084 or similar Amiga monitor for display (or an external ff/sd with svga monitor).  The real benefit of it is the 24 bit framebuffer that can be used to show images at much higher color depth than is possible in HAM6 mode (there are programs such as Viewtek that take advantage of the Opal board).  There's also an animation program (opalanimate) that can be used as well.  The card doesn't do rtg, scandoubling, or flickerfixing but it's not bad if you want to use it for the uses mentioned.  It's kind of a poor man's AGA on the A2000.

Actually there were a few programs that RTG to the Opal card.  One being Imagemaster r/t.  I think Photogenics did also...  You could also overlay the Workbench onto a 24bit background image with the Opal card. OpalPaint was one of my favorite paint packages.

Perhaps it would be useful if you described what you want/hope to achieve?

Yes, those things are true, but I didn't want to lend the impression that you could retarget Workbench and use the Opal board like a PicassoII or other true vga type board at high resolution.  Maybe I'll dig mine out of storage and play around with it again.  :-)

I installed the opal card and so realise that it is the cybervision 64 that I need.

On another note, a video toaster just went for C$55 this morning!

Wow -- I missed it by a few minutes.
