Hello! After many years hiatus I've gotten back into this fascinating machine. When I was a kid I was lucky enough to have an A1000 with which to play all sorts of fun games such as Marble Madness, Sidewinder, Xenon, the Adventure Construction Set, and non-game software such as Deluxe Paint.
Unfortunately my parents decided to get rid of it in the early 90s so they gave it to one of the local Amiga user group members who promised it was going to a good home. A few years later one of my coworkers was getting rid of his A1000 and, rather than throw it away, he donated it to me. :-)
It has 512K of chip ram, an external 1010 disk drive, and whole lot of floppy disks (many of which are bad :-( ). I got the neat little program Amiga Explorer so I was able to save a lot of the data.
Projects for the future include: putting Kick 1.3 on a disk so I can try it out (in the future I may want to put Kick 2.x in ROM somehow), upgrading the memory, and possibly adding a hard disk.
Does anyone have information on how to add 512K or 1MB of additional memory? I'm thinking about designing a board that uses cache SRAM, but perhaps there is a much simpler way.
As for the hard drive, I will need some kind of IDE controller, which IIRC requires Kick 1.3 or greater. Any ideas or is Ebay my best bet?

Welcome...
The A1000 can't be upgraded as many of the larger boxes (A2000 A3000)can...and most of the boards still available were designed for later machines...
You can still have fun with it though!
Good luck,

Greetings mister7!
Always happy to see another A1000 fan around :-)
I'm sorry to say it will be rather difficult, if not next to impossible, to expand your existing A1000. From what I've come to understand the Amiga 1000 computer has always had relatively few expansions in both the past and the present and so you'd be incredibly lucky if you able to find even a quarter of the upgrades you are after :-(
However, that being said, there is one small hope if you are really keen on upgrading your 1000.
A short while ago a person by the name of McTrinsic from A1K.org (http://www.a1k.org) (see post (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=23782)) told us about a small run of new Phoenix Replacement Motherboards for the Amiga 1000 that had recently been produced for a group in Germany (more info on phoenix boards (http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=46) )) This board would provide you with FAR greater expandability than your current system while still keeping the same look and feel that makes the 1000 so great :-)
Unfortunately the developer of this board is not currently in interested/able to create another run of boards. HOWEVER he has stated that this may change if enough interest were generated to make another production run viable (see bigmac's post here (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=24257)). Now if this sounds like just the sort of thing you’d be interested you can register your interest on this site:

If not, and you just want to play some old OCS games then you can always get yourself a bog standard A500 and expand it to suit your needs.
Either way have fun! :-D

Edit: Also be sure to check out A1k.org if you are interested in finding out more about the Phoenix motherboard.

Keep hold of the A1000. It was, simply, the sexiest Amiga made (with the C128D comming a close second). In a "few" years these will be worth a small fortune to collectors.
