:-o
Rest in peace Steve.

*cough*
Not eaten by a crocodile? How unfitting.

Crikey!

You know, you can touch a stick of dynamite, but if you touch a venomous snake it'll turn around and bite you and kill you so fast it's not even funny.-Steve Irwin

:-o
I heard it on the radio alarm this morning. Made me sit right up. Gobsmacked.
Stingray deaths are quite rare apparently.

Unsurprisingly crocodilehunter.com (http://www.crocodilehunter.com/) is inaccessible just now.

Likewise.

Whilst I think his death is a sad loss (after all, he was massively entertaining) I struggle to comprehend why people find his demise surprising. The guy routinely messed about with dangerous animals. Sooner or later, something was bound to bite, sting, crush, gouge, charge or in some other way do him in...

It's the stingray part I suppose. Only 2 or 3 people in Australia have been killed by one.
Many people have been injured and it's rarely even major. The damage by the barb can be bad, but the venom isn't that dangerous to us (if at all). Steve was just really unlucky that the barb hit between his ribs and got him right in the heart.
Anywhere else and he'd probably be laughing about it on Croc1 with the other guys.

What, he liked to wander round in the nude?
Joking.
Sad news, the guy really had a passion for his subject, and I always enjoyed watching his programs. Back when i watched TV, that is.
@Karlos :lol: :lol:
PS - like the new Avatar. What's that about bloodline's sock? Did he drink you under the table or something?
-
I heard about it on rtrfm (http://www.rtrfm.com.au/), when their full frequency did a dedication. I thought they were joking at first. It is very rare for people to be attacked by stingrays. Most harmful incidents are actually accidental, such as when a diver steps on a ray, and the tail whips the leg as it swims away. If the barb goes through the heart, I would say no emergency crew in the world could have helped him. I feel sorry for his family. I think he was something of a reckless crock-boy, but he seemed to be a pretty genuine guy. Bummer.

Fearless is how I'd describe him. Not including the fact that he's scared of parrots because they always bite him :-D

There is a link to someones childish vandalism of his Wiki entry!

I was on his wiki page at about 1pm here and a few times since and never saw the defaced pages.

Erm the note under the avatar is out of date. It was for my previous avatar that featured my broken wrist. The cast (some sort of resin) is likely comparable to said sock in terms of rigidity, tensile strength and no doubt aroma after 10 weeks...

I've just read that the policde have actually been stufying the videotape of his death (he always wanted the cameras to be rolling, even if he was in danger).
Let's hope that does NOT get released to the public, officially or not.

well, guess what....humans being, eh, Human, somebody in that chain of persons who have their hands on that tape just increases the probability by 100% that it absolutely will be seen on the web.
I'd bet money on it - and I never gamble!

Very sad news indeed, I had a lot of respect for that bloke, even though I found him a tad annoying :-(
On that note, any of you Brits able to pay Germaine Greer a visits and jam a sock (preferably one of bloodline's) in her mouth?

I can't provide high speed lead but I can provide medium speed aluminium ;-)
@ Vinnie
I suspect that the video footage of Irwin's fatal injury will be of no gore value at all. I am guessing based on the mechanism of the injury that the strike itself was probably quite quick and Irwin may not even have realised that he took a hit through the heart. He probably surfaced and then realised he was in trouble. I wouldn't be surprised if reports come in later that he was able to talk to the guys who got him out of the water. This injury is just like a stab with a screwdriver. It doesn't have to bleed much externally. My bet is there is no blood seen on the footage at all.

The Prime Minister offered a State Funeral. Says something I suppose, but I'm not sure what.

According to the BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/5314918.stm) (I can't find the other link with more info) he pulled the barb out right after being hit. There was a fair bit of blood. The early reports were saying that he didn't have a pulse and he wasn't breathing when he got onto the boat, but he wasn't actually dead at that point according to the cameraman.

On Friday there were calls for fans to wear khaki in remembrance of Steve Irwin so I looked all around town but khaki shorts and shirts were sold out. I saw people wearing khaki a lot and a few people with these items going to the checkouts.
There should be more discussion points in towns and cities, somewhere where people can sit, watch the news and discuss events. It's just the same as when 9/11 happened 5yrs ago... people had to crowd into TV shops to find out what was going on when they were in town.
Times Square is I suppose an example but I'm thinking more meditative with places to buy newspapers and read teletext/internet. Maybe even park wi-fi spots.
If I hadn't heard it on the radio I wouldn't have known!

Speaking of khaki, I love the fact that everyone is signing khaki shirts at the zoo due to the lack of commemorance book.
That's a very nice touch.

>>he always wanted the cameras to be rolling, even if he was in danger
Hum,
i read somewhere that he wanted his death to be shown if he were ever killed by a croc - i think he wanted to show that humans were no way special as far as the food chain went...
But , i also read that his wife Terry was against it, and that video will never be broadcast.

@ Blobzie
"...i think he wanted to show that humans were no way special as far as the food chain went..."

I agree with that sentiment. If you are in the croc's territory and he decides you're his next take-away, that's a matter that you two will have to resolve. If a croc ever gets me, the score will be 1-1 because I have already eaten crocodile. That's in my top three of best meats to eat.
Of course I would rather keep the score 1-0 to me ;-)

Hm, I never knew carnivore meat was eatable :-?
