Post by: Ian-uk on August 28, 2006, 05:52:30 PM
Could anyone tell me if amiga OS 3.9 will run on an A600 with a Apollo 620 Processor 68020RC @ 20Mhz with Kickstart 3.1 roms? Many thanks Ian

As long as you have at least 6MB of Fast RAM, it will run on an 020.

I first started my 1200 with 8 meg of ram with no accelerator in the begining, and with just 8 meg of Fast ram at the time, OS 3.9 ran ok better than I expected.
Try to get 8 meg of ram if you can (if you havent already that is)
If you have 4 meg then I am not at all sure if it will struggle or not.

It is possible to run OS 3.9 on 4 MB of fastmem. I tried it with an A1200 and a GVP 1208 card with 4 MB of RAM.

The only thing I discovered, was it couldn't show the backdrop of OS 3.9. Other programs did run. But it takes a lot of Fastmem.

IMHO do not bother with 3.9 on a slow ECS machine.  Not enough speed, chip RAM bandwidth, and colors to be usable.  Heck even on my A1200, 040 and 32MB RAM it is painful, would hate to see it on a A600!!!!  In my experience 3.9 really shines with a 030+24bit Video card.  Infact a 030 with 16MB and a Video card is much more usable over a 040 or 060 and AGA!

I agree with TjLaZer - don't bother with OS3.9 on any Amiga unless you have a graphics card as it'll only be a disappointment!

Yes, I agree with that 100%.

I guess I will endorse the having a machine with a video card. Just about any machine with an operating system out there will work a lot better using an add-on graphics card, over then onboard stuff.

Yes indeed, I was shocked when I had tried my A3000 with 030/25 and a CyberVision 64 with OS 3.9.  Without the card it was slower than I could handle, but with the card it seemed like I did a big processor upgrade!

If it's gunna be a serious working machine then I wouldn't bother...

It CAN be done as long as u have enough FAST RAM...

It may be worth doing for fun though :)
I got OS3.9 up and running on my CDTV just so I could show that it could be done :) It was quite a bit of fun getting it on there, and it's still there today 'cause I mainly use it just for CDTV games... But occasionally I'll let the HDD boot up into OS3.9 and have a play :D

I've got 8Mb fast ram and 2Mb chip ram for it. I'm not going to use it as my main machine, got my A1200 and pc for that.
