Hey folks, I'm trying to useTFX on my 060 Amiga, I was just wondering if there's a way to speed it up a little, the 040 executable doesn't work on my machine though, so Ihaveto run the FPU version, was there ever an 060 executable or something?
Also anyone know what's happened to Back2roots?
Thanks,
Robert

I never realised it was released!?!

@Bloodline
Sure it was released, though I think not in a finished state, but oh well:-)
It's on CU Amiga CD #15

Discussed to death on the several other threads. Use the search function. ;-)

Hi,
Neither FPU or 040 excutables works for me either (bliz1260). I have been searching like a madman for a 060 version but haven't found any. Please let me know if you find something.

There is no 060 version. Remember they stopped working on the game in 1995, before 060 cards for the Amiga appeared. My friend used to work as a tester on TFX when he was at Ocean and the game that appeared on the CD is unfinished. The Amiga just isn't good at 3D flight sims - a $20 486 PC with a VLB graphics card from eBay will play TFX silky smooth while the same game on a $700 060 Amiga is almost unplayable in comparison :-(
-
Pity. I'd say most 040/060 RTG systems had ample muscle for a game of that generation.
-
Hey Karlos, Unfortunately TFX is AGA only, Shame there isn't an 060+RTG version, that would rock.

Yeah, I know. I was just reflecting on the fact that if the source were available it might be possible. Although I imagine the miggy version bashes the metal to hell.

try to disable some cache with cpu060.
-
So, does CUAmiga own the sourcecode? It should be released.. Maybe one of the many Amiga coders out there would have the guts to make some sort of playable RTG version!
-
Is it possible to obtain this game anywhere? I'd like to see how it runs on my A4000 and compare it to how it ran on my 486 so long ago.
-
IIRC the game contained several executables, some of them was marked with _fpu or _040 in their names, but others were also included to the package. I know `cause I`ve played it several times, on CSPPC. Check the directory...

Will be slower, I think.
Somehow just a small bunch of games in this genre gave enough good performance/detail. This is why Combat air patrol is my favourite, with Armour Geddon I-II, although these aren`t striclty flightsims.

TFX actually ran pretty well on my 060/66MHz, totally smooth and playable. I do remember it being very buggy though.
I think the best thing you can do is make sure your system is optimized for getting the most out of AGA. (The game is OS-friendly IIRC?)
-
Perhaps you could ask the WHDLoad guys to make an fix/installer for it?
-
Personally I`d prefer more classic games with WHDLoad, for xmple Capital Punishment or Rally Championship.
Instead of using WHD for TFX would be far better a quick PPC/RTG port I think. Of course bugfixed ;P

I think on 060 (and 040?) you needed to run the standard executable of TFX. I think I'm right in saying that on the FPU version the cannon didn't work.
I also think FastExec (aminet) or similar will speed it up a little bit. (Works wonder with Star Crusader on 060).
I recently tried the demo of F/A-18 Hornet 2.0 for the Mac with Shapeshifter on my 060, and anybody who feels an Amiga can't handle a mid nineties flight-sim should probably do the same.
TFX is a long way from being optimised, so is Tornado AGA.
For air to air combat, I still think Falcon Mission 1 (with the Fulcrum) is great.

Apart from throwing a memory error on the Workbench as it was starting, and me not having a clue what the controls were, it worked really well on my 4000 with CS Mk1-060/50. The graphics were pretty smooth even in high detail with lots of AI planes about (all shooting at me!!!).
I used the 040 executable as the 040 and 060 instruction sets are closest related i think? It seems to work ok, but the whole game is a mess of unfinished-ness. If they'd finished it and optimised it for the amiga chipset it'd have made a great CD32 game with the CD Audio tracks from the PC TFX-CD version.
