Title: Telecomms industry. Get good Karma by helping a teenager to pass her exams!
Post by: on May 12, 2003, 11:19:45 AM
My niece has to do an assignment for school on the state of the telecommunications industry Worldwide, particularly in Europe, Central & North America and Asia Pacific Regions.

She asked me to search the net for her to get info on the various comms providers in each continent/country, but it's just to big a job!

So, I thought "Amiga.org has a big international readership, why not ask for help?"

So guys and girls, can you help her out with details of as many telcos you can think of in the country you live in? State owned telco's too if any still exist! :-)

Thanks in advance.

Try http://www.gsmworld.com/index.shtml (http://www.gsmworld.com/index.shtml) for plenty of providers... (Also coverage maps, roaming info, to much to sum it up, real good site)

For dutch operators;

www.o2.nl (http://www.o2.nl)
www.orange.nl (http://www.orange.nl)
www.vodafone.nl (http://www.vodafone.nl)
www.kpn.nl (http://www.kpn.nl)
www.t-mobile.nl (http://www.t-mobile.nl)

Most of these also operate in other European Countries, like the UK, Germany etc.. Maybe under a different name, but some URL work if you replace the .nl with .co.uk or .de..

I could also provide ya with more info, but it depends on what info she really needs... (Prices ? Network config ? Network standards (GSM900/GSM1800 etc), Historie ?)

Thanks Seer,

She just need names of the telcos and maybe a bit of history (time of Privatisation etc), but she can research that herself I suppose.

No probs.

BTW, for some history on GSM itself, look on gsmworld, under "about gsm association" and then history... IF that's not enough to keep her busy today  ;)

And I forgot 1 website, the telco watchdog of The Netherlands, www.opta.nl (http://www.opta.nl)... Could be wrong about the URL, for some reason my setup here doesn't like the site... But is should provide some additional info on GSM in my country... Not sure if there's an English section tho...

@mdma

I've been working in Telecoms for 5 Years since I finished my Degree.

If she's got any technical questions that need answering fire away.

Rather than searching for all the telco's in the world.
It might be easier if she has a word with PR departments of the following companies.

They might tell you who their customers are.

Marconi - System X
Nortel Networks - DMS
Ericson
Nokia

There is a huge difference between service providers and carriers however.

Any questions just ask.

Another Dutch company Seer didn't mention is New Skies Satellites NV (http://www.newskies.com/).  This company was started in 1998 under a privatization ruling for Intelsat (Gov't funded), in which New Skies became a spin-off company.  Eutelsat and Inmarsat are under the same ruling and have privatized as well.  The privatization of the telecommunications industry (at least where the telecommunications satellite industry is concerned) was pushed to the private sector during the later years in Ronald Reagan's administration (late 80s).  Orion Network Systems (now owned by Loral/Cyberstar) became one of the first privately held satellite companies in the US and Europe with a collaboration between various companies in the US and Europe including Matra Marconi and British Aerospace.  There is bookoos of information on this small area of the telecommunications industry and should be easily found on the web.  I hope this will help inspire her :-)

Good luck!

You're in it too, huh? I spend most of my time on alcatel stuff, but I spend a fair amount of time on the Nortel BSN-5000's, the Lucent(Ascend/Cascade) CBX-500, GX-550, and B-STDX9000, FT-2000, DDM1/2000 (OC12/3), Catena, PSAX, and... some Marconi products that I try to leave for others to work on... :)

Anyway, I can probably help with some North American info if it is needed.
