Title: Name that malfunction! (audible monitor problem)
Post by: RedWarrior on May 12, 2003, 07:28:56 AM
Hey guys- after just having sourced a new power supply for my A500 (thanks again for your advice!)... my beloved 1084s monitor has decided to throw a tanty.

The original transformer was changed about 2 years ago at great expense... so it has better not be that. (original transformer replaced with Philips component)  Everything else in the monitor is the same as it was in 1991.

When I turn it on, the power light goes on for a second or 2 as normal, then this noise starts and the power light flickers in sync... (no image on screen... not even illuminated blank)

have a listen if you like: http://www.users.on.net/aquarius/data/poor_1084s.mp3

Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks

RW

The first thing to try is to resolder all connections to the flyback transformer. Also see the shield next to the flyback for any black marks - if the flyback's case is cracked, you might get arching.

Another common failure is the power supply, that's located right behind the power switch (slides out once you remove the back cover).

I'm afraid I can't listen to the mp3 now, so I'm just working from experience. :-)

flicker fixer, scan doubler,  a cheap PC monitor, and a pair of speakers... probably alot cheaper solution... I loved those old Amiga monitors though...I used one for a long time for non-related amiga stuff ... it died recently :(

I mine had a very similer problem...dead screen and buzzing noises... I dunno how to remedy that

The led flickers? AC is being passed to the circuits...
An STK might have gone off and you should also change
the capacitors, as they tend to dry up after some years
(10-20).

I'm not going to give up on my monitor after all these years!! I use it as my TV mostly,... which still manages to `wow' a lot of people.

What is a flyback?  I did open it up the other day... but I couldn't see anything that looked broken... would a regular TV techie be able to fix it?

If not- anyone know an Amiga fixer in Melbourne?

Cheers,

RW

I found this info about the 1084: A loud whistling noise indicates a bad flyback transformer (also known as an LOPT). Some 1084 monitors also have digital RGB (PC clone CGA) inputs, and there was such a profusion of minor or major variations that any 1084 might have any combination of analog RGB, digital RGB, and composite inputs.

Dunno if it helps much since the ppl above also mentioned the flyback transformer...

If you want, you can have one of mine. I don't have room for it anymore. But, as it is in my bedroom in Norway, I guess shipping is a problem. Well. It's yours if you want it.  :-)

Very kind of you, but I think the shipping would be too expensive!

Thanks anyway mate ;)

Dunno about that, but Amiga monitors are so close to being television monitors that pretty much any TV tech will sort it out for you.

I'm in Melbourne. I also have a spare 1084 (not s) that I'd part with for ten bucks. That's all I paid for it at an AUG auction a couple of months back.

Well it sounds a hell of tha lot like a tripping breaker.  Beyond that, I have not a clue.  I would suggest a flexable TV repair shop, and be prepared to be shocked by the cost.  Or as suggested look for an "new" one.  In any case invest in that scan doubler.  they are life savers.
