Title: Greetings, fellow Amiga users (lovers, worshippers, fanatics...)
Post by: Vanfanel on August 12, 2006, 07:52:50 PM
Hello, how is everyone. My name is Chris, though on the net I usually respond to Van (anime fans are sure to recognize something). I'm glad to have found this wonderful site. My introduction into computers started with an A1000, and it still works 19-20 years later (my disks are another story entirely). Sadly, this was the only Amiga I had experience with, so the few times I've peeked into the Amiga world since then, I got horribly lost trying to make sense of all the newer software packages, WB add-ons/replacements, expansion cards and whatnot. I've become a PC user by necessity, but I miss my Amiga. I do use Amiga Forever, but since my knowledge of anything beyond 1.2 is very limited, I'm not entirely sure of what I'm doing. Hopefully, as I read through the forums here, I'll get more of an idea of what the newer (respectively) stuff can handle, as well as for what I could get today to simulate that Amiga feel.

Hello and welcome ,
this sure is the place to discover again Amiga , cause there are a lot of users with experience .
As for the last question i would suggest to get an A 1200 cause no emulation is like the Real thing .   :-)

Welcom back Van (Chris)  I would say!

Me, I have the miggy for 10 years, and now my brains are learning how to use it! :-D

So, then again, keep in touvh with this Forum and your knowledge-base gets stuck with overflow!

Good luck and WELCOM!

Hi Chris and welcome to the coolest computer discussion board on the net, discussing the coolest computer designed.

What he said is generally true. A A1200 will the most easily give you decent computing power with easy backward compatability if you want to play around with the old stuff, and "relative" ease of parts to upgrade it. AmigaKit, is a super store, from which to get your fix.

Of course, if you run into any problems, there are many here willing to answer your questions. You might be surprised at the speed at which people answer your inquires.  :-D

Thank you all for your replies. Certainly makes a newbie feel welcomed. ^_^

While I agree to get the best experience you need to have hardware, I have space constraints right now, so WinUAE it will have to be until that blessed day when I have the space for multiple machines. Though when that day comes, I'll keep the A1200 in mind as the Amiga to look for. I didn't know which would be the best one to get, and I originally thought that would be an A4000, but I did hear it had some problems.

Very impressive collection (and I like the choice of cars, too). Looking at all the stuff you have done make me wonder, when I do get a new Amiga (as I'm sure finding A1000 upgrades would be next to impossible) which ones I should look for. But I guess that's more of a question to ask once I get my hands on one.

One more thing? Is there anyone in the Fort Lauderdale area that knows of a store that still handles Amiga parts in any shape or form. There used to be a store a long time ago, and there was one used computer parts store that had some Amiga parts. And, just for kicks and giggles, just how futile would it be to find any upgrades for my a1000?

Dare I say it, but egay, ...I mean eBay, is probably the only place you're going to find anything useful for the A1000.  The A1200 is a different story; Amigakit and several other shops are well stocked with parts, periphreals and upgrades for the A1200.  Plus just a stock A1200 alone can be had for pretty cheap.  I'd say around $125 or so?   You can upgrade it incrementally afterwords at your choosing.  Thats just mho..  :)  Regards, Dave

Ah, it figures. Was just a thought I was contemplating. I did take a look at Amigakit, and I'd have to say (from my limited experience) getting an a1200 from them would be a decent deal. I just find it weird that they don't have one with a US power supply.

Welcome home.  1000 are cool.  upgrades are limited but the basic stuff is around... somewhere.   WinUAE is very nice for good classic amiga emulation and Amithlon is good for "highend amiga stuff" (what ever that is).  I think that winUAE maybe better for your consumption.  IMO Amiga kit is expencive. The base 1200 price is not bad... its the other things that add up. Look on amibench and ebay or around computer recycling places sometimes you can find a whole package for a good price, don't rush it.  You can use winUAE to start getting back into the amiga thing... what kind of apps do you use?
BTW there are some ultra cool a1000 upgrades, including something called a phonix motherboard replacement including a 030 cpu...they are imposible to find.) do a search...

Maybe you could do a lot of other things to get some money.

- start selling questionable items on street corners

- sell your blood and plasma

- take out a second mortgage on your house

- sell your mom and dads house (if your credit is so bad you don't have one)

- sell your children into life debts
- sell your neighbors children into life debts
- hustle a few unnecessary organs and tissues
- swear blood oaths to various demon factions

By then you should have barely enough (the rest you could probably get by any manor of shady activities) to afford an Amiga 4000D or an Amiga 4000T (saying you have been bad enough) and the various accesories that some many seem to grab in their paws.

Right now, WinUAE is what I've been using, though not very often. I've only played around with it, whenever I wanted to have a bit of an amiga experience again. I don't have any set core of apps or wb extensions. I welcome any recommendations for software I should look for. I do have RTG set up on it, but that's about it.

As for hardware, it will be a while, as I don't have any free space, other than if I did manage to find upgrades for my A1000, so I have plenty of time to research and see what my options are.

Yeah, I've been getting the impression that attempting to acquire a fully decked out A4000D or T would require several questionable things. Fortunately, I have no space for another computer where I live, so maybe by the time I do, I'll have come by the money legitimately (hey, I can hope, right?).
