My A600 freezes upon starting AmiTCP when the 3COM 3c589 NIC is in the PCMCIA port. Started SnoopDOS and turned out to be hanging on the pccard.library. Tried a different 3c589: same problem. Tried the 3c589 in an A1200: works fine.
The A600 works OK with a wireless Orinoco NIC. Someone got an A600 going with a 3Com?
-
What Kickstart and Workbench versions have you got in the A600 and A1200? Also, what versions are the libraries you are using?
-
A1200: KS 40.68 WB 40.42 (both 3.1)
A600: KS 40.63 WB 40.42 (both 3.1)
I suppose all lib versions are the same. Installed all from the same floppies.
Edit: The A1200 has a Blizzard 1230 IV with 8MB RAM.

Try the card_info program and see if it bombs out when running that.
-
Card_info works OK. Output:
3Com Corporation 3C589D TP/BNC LAN Card Ver. 2a
Appears to be a Network card
CCR Offset address (24 bit) = $01000, Config ID = $01
Interface Type 1, uses:
Getting I/O memory now - remove card if system freezes!
Saving data to t:card_info.bin
card_info done.
-
maybe the problem is coming from amitcp. have you try genesis of os3.9 or miami?
-
It does work with an Orinoco. On the A1200 it works also with AmiTCP. So I can't imagine anything is wrong with AmiTCP.

There has to someone who has an A600 with 3Com NIC running...
-
Is the second 3c589 you tried exactly the same model as the first, or slightly different, eg. does it give the same output with card_info?
I wonder could it be because of the 68000, but I'd expect an odd address access to give a guru rather than a freeze.
It might be better to test the card with sanautil from Aminet instead of a TCP/IP stack:
sanautil device 3c589.device status

I have an A600 with Neil's excellent driver and Miami and it works fine.
How much RAM do you have? It took a lot of Squeezing for me to get Miami & Workbench trimmed enough to load.
-
The A600 has 2MB chipram only. Could this be the problem?
But why does the wireless card work fine? Is the prism2.device less memory hungry?
-
I dont know. I dont imagine so. Check your free RAM when you are using it.
I think that AmiTCP is less RAM hungry than Miami so I would have thought you'd be fine.
You have to use Miami with either no GUI or with the GTLayout toolkit to get it to fit in 2Mbyte chip.
