Astronomers discover Krypton, according to the new film Superman Returns which prompted Superman to investigate, explaining his long absence from Earth.
I thought the film was excellent and the opening sequence was both visually impressive and nostalgic.
Who'd have thought they'd release a Superman sequel after 20+ years and it would be this damn good?
The film takes a quick glimpse back to Clarke Kent's youth and follows with an epic return to the people. The film progresses with grace and magic with many surprises and twists with weaponry and destruction to rival Terminator 2.
A film like this doesn't need swearing or shocking violence when it has structure, humour and menace like this masterpiece (from the director of X-Men).
Go see it in the cinema if just to witness it in all it's glory - this is how to make sequels George Lucas.

Actually, I thought it sucked.
It could have premeired on ABC or something and have been the movie of the week...but a summer block-buster it is not.
I won't state why by giving away spoilers but where was the big showdown?

There is going to be a series of Superman films with another due in a few years time.
I thought it concluded rather nicely though. I don't think we should give spoilers or even plot details away this early but suffice to say the 2x sellout crowds at my local cinema seemed quite impressed.
Did you watch the dodgy DVD copy or something? This was directed by the X-Men dude so he wasn't going to make a duffer was he!
I hope you didn't go to see the new Fast And The Furious film. If ever there was a lack of imagination and a bone-headed mind numbing experience it would be a bunch of guys revving up their de-badged Ford Escorts with unusually large exhausts and fluorescent paint jobs.

No, I saw it in the theatre in the US in early July when it premeired here.
I went in with high hopes. Left unfulfilled. The plot wasn't that good. People just accept Clark Kent's return and coincidentally so is Superman...hmmm... no one questioned it.
Sometimes he's weakened and sometimes not.
Should I go into the big useless, boring 3-on-1 fight scene?
The highlight of the film involved someone getting hit with a piano.
I think Superman IV:The Quest For Peace was more interesting. Or even the Star Trek movie where they have to save the whales.

Its funny though in SUPERMAN we clearly see Krypton blow up completly.
Not to be too geeky but isnt there a major flaw with Superman visiting Krypton. Doesnt Kryptonite which is the rocks from krypton cause superman discomfort and isnt the earths sun what gives Superman his power so surely being back at Krypton he would become mortal again.
However the main plot flaw is how does no one notice that clark kent the guy who looks like Superman returns at the same time as Superman

Christopher Reeves pulled off Clark Kent perfectly. I see no difference between Superman and Clark Kent in this film.
Good catch about discovering Krypton. Atleast on Smallville, they got it right.
For scientists to discover Krypton, his ship and the remnants of Krypton would have had to travel faster than the speed of light when it blew up, which it obviously did't since it took him 6 years to go and come back.
It would have been better if they had a better plot and just picked up where they left off as if he never left to begin with.

Oh please, let's not get all sciency here. This is Superman... I'm sure we could go into all manner of science talk about how it's not possible for a man to lift up a jumbo jet or something.
Enjoy the surreal triumphant return of a childhood hero and appreciate the artists who did the special FX.
No swear words, no nudity, no innuendo, no gangster posturing, street racin' or depravity. Just good old romance and comic book heroism.
And as for Krypton... it was only described as "a graveyard" - no mention as to the planet's integrity. We did see an impressive shattered world in the opening sequence though. And what's to stop wormholes and time-travel coming into things?
I think possibly the idea of the film is to pluck up people's spirits... there were a number of tangible similiarities between the space shuttle disaster, 9/11 and the film.

i went to see it, but for me it droned on for 1 hour longer than it should have, it was a huge disappointment.
it was basically a rehash of previous superman movies, very little original thinking.. could have been so much better.
The plane crash bit was excellent tho, it started well but seemed to go on too long.
No swear words, no nudity, no innuendo, no gangster posturing, street racin' or depravity. Just good old romance and comic book heroism.
Only a poor chap who is being cheated on, lol

Well without spoiling things too much, I thought there were some really cool ideas in the film.
Things that you wondered about from the originals came alive in this new film (the interesting 'chemical reaction' for example).
It was quite artistic in places and borrowed ideas from a number of films and integrated them well with the comic book character's style.
It was 2½ hrs if I remember correct and any film that long won't hold the attention of someone with a high metabolism stuck in a cramped cinema chair, however it is best viewed in the cinema (for anyone thinking about going to see it).
