Title: Making icon (.info) loading faster...
Post by: quenthal on August 01, 2006, 01:55:25 PM
Yesterday I backed up my SYS to cdrw (just burned the whole drive as it is with makecd). In MakeCD there was this nice option to put all .info files to the beginning of CD to speed up .info -loading.

However, what really is intresting is that loading for example all those icons I have in Prefs-drawer loaded infact faster, and atleast in order, compared when opened from my real harddrive.

So what I'm wondering if there is some sort of intelligent defragmenter for SFS? Or is this reorganization only possible if I copy all my stuff to safe place, format SYS, and then copy files manually back?

ReOrg has such option. ReOrg is FFS only, though.

Hmm.. Wonder why I didn't use ReOrg when I was still using FFS.

After little googling I stumbled to this (at old SFS homepage):

Quote
3 November 1998, changes for version 1.10:
...
- Set version to 1.x to be compatible with ReOrg (ReOrg sometimes hangs the machine when there is a SFS filesystem which has a 0.x version).  SFS is still not finished however, so be careful!

But that probably just means that ReOrg can work on your FFS partitions even when there are some SFS partitions as well. Well, I try with some non-important sfs-partition.

Cool! Let us know if it works! My game icons are huge full colour PNG icons. My 060 and gfx card make loading each one pretty quick, but a drawer full of them still takes a while to open. I'd love to be able to organise the disk so they load more quickly.

Well, it doesn't work as Piru said. So that leaves manual reorganization as only(?) option for SFS-users.

Shame. What would manual reorganisation involve?  :-?

Copy all files to another partition, format this one and copy all files back. Copy .info files first (or last or in alphabetical order or ..., depending on how the file system works).

Bye,
Thomas

I think there is a program on Aminet for making some sort of "game menu" where you can quickly select game.
Someone might make a system that would be similar to that lemon (IIRC) thing and UAE on PC.

BTW, there is also another solution as my friend Chain said, to use HDD with large buffer, 2Mb or more.

Hum,
i noticed that IconBeFast.lha (http://www.aminet.net/util/boot/IconBeFast.lha) (30kb) was loaded onto aminet a few days ago. It claims to patch them for faster icons & colour mapping  (read me (http://www.aminet.net/util/boot/IconBeFast.readme))

Yeah, that is true. Reorg. of ".info"s with this patch speeds up icon loading quite a lot.
