Finally! My A1 G4 has arrived. I've made the following discoveries:
1. The C=1942 Monitor can't handle modern graphics cards.
2. I don't know anything about the internal workings of modern computers.
3. I HATE Linux.
On another note, I made some stylized 'A' printouts to glue over the ugly Windoze keys. Now to wait for the OS to go with them.
-
Congratz!
And don't worry. You aren't the only one who don't agree with Linux. :-D :-D
Some of the gfx cards can go down to 42Hz. maybe that would be agreable for the monitor?
-
Please, tell us where do you ordered and date of order, please.
Anyway.congratulations man.
:-o
-
I tried all 3 Linux 'screenmodes.' The two highest are a complete mess and the smallest is still a disaster. It's like overtweaking MonEd on Amiga native screens.
I think it's time to join some AmigaLinux mailing lists...
-
I ordered from Softhut... middle of November, I think.
-
Congradulations!
I can't wait to get OS4 here either! I've heard that Hyperion is working on having some great XBox games ported at launch time! Apparantly, even AmigaDE will be shipping with OS4, and anyone who preordered AmigaONE/G4 will be getting a free AmigaAnywhere game bundle!
So you need to get that monitor replaced in a hurry! Don't worry so much about Linux, just use your old Amiga as much as possible while you still can! Soon, it will be living in the closet (or for some of us, accross a network cable) after OS4 comes out.
-
There's no reason to hate Linux. Give it a try!
It might make you appreciate AOS even more!
:-D
-
Good for you! Have fun! :-)
-
:pint: Congratulations, sir! Let us know how you get along.

Where on earth did you here this from?
-
1942 should handle vga (640*480@60Hz)

I can`t agree more!
I`ve also heard somewhere that AOne-XE is making some sort of "sales impact" as it sells 3 times more compared to Pegasos boards.
Life can finally begin! :)
-
I like linux nice to hear you got your a1 mine wont be much longer soon be more of these things than pegasos .
-
what version of linux are you using ? try something a bit more user friendly if u want like mandrake ppc. I use mandrake on my X86 box its pretty nice. There is one advantage ... if u get the linux drivers for your ppc and recompile them for ppc it will be faster than the amigaos4.0 drivers i think . Anyway stick with linux a bit try mandrake ( www.mandrake.com) ok cya

Linux over Windoze anyday. I've used it, Redhat 8 is on my laptop. there is a learning curve, but every Linux user is less money in Evil Bill's pocket.

Can't believe they shipped it with windows keyboards.
Why do they underestimated identity like this?!
Damn I would pay more for an Amiga keyboard alone but shipping the thing with Windows keys is an ultrage. :-x

Get a grip. A keyboard is a keyboard. Ok, an amiga keyboard is better, but a windoze keyboard is better than nothing at all...

Cherry CyBo@rd Plus with boing ball keys. Wireless keyboard and mouse for AmigaOne and Pegasos
69.90 Euronen
at your local Amiga store or Vesalia or KDH.

sTix: There's no reason to hate Linux. Give it a try!
I tried eight versions. I've finally come to the conclusion that I hate it. ;-)
Sorry, man. Linux doesn't come close to the satisfaction level of AmigaOS, even if it IS more competent, technologically.
It might make you appreciate AOS even more!
No, it'll just make you yearn for faster, cheaper PC hardware to run it on, and just how much easier it is to get into CLI and Workbench, instead of Bash, XWindows, and Gnome. You should buy an AmigaOne for AmigaOS, not Linux.
-
3. I HATE Linux.
you had better get used to it! it might be youre only os on the machine for quite a while! ;-)

GGS-Data (http://www.ggsdata.se) has Amiga-keyboards with
PS/2 interface. He actually has them on sale for
250 SEK. It's a nice keyboard made for either
emulation (AmigaXE) or the keyboard interfaces.
No need to pay 650 SEK for that other keyboard.
I have one here lying around waiting to be used.

Well, for a while, I had my A1200 kb connected to my Pegasos.
It was in that Infinitiv keyboard case, that converts it to "standard" Win95kb.
I heard, it might be problematic, but THAT problematic... Firstly, cursor keys didn't work (They don't seem to send even keycode) and Amiga keys didn't work as "Windows keys replacement", becouse of that, no kb shortcuts...
At least, I could press many keys simultaneously, which I can't, if I connect it to A1200 with Infinitiv's Win95 kb interface.
As a conclusion, it seems to have problems (most likely becouse of kb, not interface, other kb's worked fine), that seriously affects usage, I don't recommend it. I replaced it with Logitech wireless kb (which works just fine)

Ehhh.... I don't know. I tried to install it twice on my 1200, failed both times. Even preinstalled on the A1 it doesn't work 100%. I'll try it a while longer...
You're right in that I appreciate AmigaOS even more!

Too bad Big Billy more than likely got paid something when that laptop was purchased. :-x That license stipulation pisses me off to no end! Did M$'s settlement with the DOJ end that crap?

I don't get it. What kind of advice is this?
Matt just gave his hard earned (probably) money to buy a new computer and he is supposed to use it and have fun with it.
If I bought a new Pentium 4 and still had to use my old 386 I would be very upset I tell you! And as I can tell Matt is not very "satisfied" from his new "Amiga" - for now at least-.
Pathetic...

A tip here- the thing about 'consumer' *NIX distributions is that everyone 'blames' or 'trusts' the installer. They've made great strides- Mandrake/x86 is certainly 'consumer-ready' by now- but really, Never Trust an Installer. They can't stand in for familiarity with a system, and until you can gain that familiarity, Everything Will Hurt. It's a sad fact of life. Things like MacOS and Windows hurt less mostly because we've been familiar with them, or at least their concepts, most of our lives; if you allow yourself to get to know *NIX, you may find that it often *is,* or *can be made* consistent, but in a totally different way from what you're used to.
So on the monitor issue- XFree86 certainly still isn't perfect in that regard, but there's now good support for the VESA Display Data Channel, which practically all *modern* displays support - and which has been such a godsend that, it's true, modeline hacking for non-DDC monitors has become even more of a black art than it was. Fact is, having the monitor *know* what modes it supports and *tell* the OS is a much more elegant (and thus Amiga-spirited?) solution than forcing the system (or user) to 'blindly' guess.
So, while a new monitor *is* annoying, and another expenditure to either make or hack around, it's not unreasonable to suggest it. On a day with good rebates, US$75 will get you one with at least 1024x768 resolution at a good refresh rate, which should be equally usable (and useful!) under OS4 or MOS.
...and remember, don't blame Linux if you don't feel it's what was advertised- blame its distributors and advocates. ;-)

I've waited this long for the machine to arrive. A couple more months for OS4 doesn't seem so bad to me. Once I get a stable Linux install, I'm going to get UAE and MOL up and use those.
I'm just glad to finally have the hardware. I'd rank my overall satisfaction at this point as "Pleased." :-)
-
Hey Matt, I am glad you are satisfied with your new computer and I hope you are having fun with it (Linux ain't bad)! :-)
