It's the weekend. All week, as with every week, I've worked my arse off and want a break. A break from work, a break from projects, a break from stress, a break from mundane everyday housekeeping tasks (that get crammed into the weekend since theres never any time during the week), a break from this fricking aching itchy arm....
All I want to do is power up one of the several amiga systems here and do a spot of coding, maybe play with OS4 on the still-to-update A1 or something, but there's always something more important to do. And when there isn't, I'm usually too damn tired. I haven't used any of my amigas, not even UAE properly for many months. It's really p*ssing me off now.
I never thought I'd look back on an earlier period of unemployment fondly, but at least I got to indulge the miggy habit a bit. Not anymore.
How do other people here manage to make time for their vice?

Don't know, I'm actually working at this very moment, tomorow as well. I just browse sites in between the workload.
This evening I need to finish setting up a laptop and a desktop and explain how it works.. It's going to be a long evening before I can start relaxing.
Luckily I had 5 days of last week, no family around either. To bad work needed advice from me so they had to bother me even then.

Heh, I know the feeling... Between work, errands and keeping up with my girlfriend, what little time I have to myself is spent resting... Rather than finishing my tower project.
Hell, I haven't even gotten to properly test my new Mediator, since I still need to widen the hole in the back so the cables will fit on the cards.
Ahh the hazards of having a life. All you folks out there who don't have lives, beware! Existance is much simpler without a life!

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's always feast or famine. Where's the employment in moderation? :-)
Heh... As for how I make time for my vice... I sneak in a post here and there while at work. Helping others out with the machine is basically how I keep remembering how to use it. I haven't had an actual Amiga powered up on my own for more than an hour or two in over a year. [about the time I moved to my new house -- which has required quite a bit of work.] :-(

I get to use my Amigas (I was gonna say turn the girlfriend on but...;-)) when the kids are in bed*.
I have three, one of which is 20 weeks old (children that is, not amigas ! I have two of those set up),
and therefore a lot of work !
I have a week off, as soon as call-out duties are complete tomorrow, but I can pretty well guarantee the amount of time spent on the amiga will be about the same as ever !
*the way it usually happens is this: I get online (having a real PITA with abelinternet not recognising passwords for the first handful of dialin attempts :pissed: ), I will just be starting to filter me spam out before downloading the authentic (ie jokes from me mon!)emails, and I'll get yelled by the Missus who wants either a cuppa (cos shes feeding the litl'un fair play) or she wants to discuss furniture  or shes moaning I never spend time with her.
although, the last 3 nights, we did
1) watch half of Lord Of The Rings together,
2) watch Paul Merton discussing silent screen comedy heroes
3) watch t'other half of LOTR.
I have been (on and off) trying to figure out how to get Spirantho's AmiTV to work on Update 4, but thats like looking for a bit of hay in a massive stack of needles,
but the last week has seen me trying to get near the A1 to try and repair a non-X'ing linux system after I got a /home space riddled with knackered files in the fs or somesuch.
ho hum !
at least the weather is turning crappy now I'm off!

I force myself to do atleast ONE boring household-task EVERY day after or before work; the dishes, sorting papers or vacuming or something, then I have the hole weekend to do wathever I want with good contience. But it all comes down to priority. I live in an appartment so I don't need to bother about anything outside my door, and I don't have any timedemanding girlfriend, kids or pets.

well, i feel so young :D
unlike you people, i am a student and i have another month off before anything. just about to by a vga_adapter so i can finally use my 1200 again on my older pc monitor!!
lots of free time and lots of adfs. i would code (see what c++ is like on the amiga, as i do it on the pc all the time instead) but my amiga has not got the power i dont think :(
turbo 1220 accelerator - doesnt seem to be enought. 6mb total memory.
anyway, i still have my TIME! though, i do still get squashed like yous because i have a life too!

By not issuing the closed general rant tag, you have set up a feedback loop that will eventually cause the destruction of the universe!

Only for those idiots still using Internet Explorer.
For Safari and Firefox users, we'll all be spirited off to another dimension and won't notice a single thing.
Back on topic..
Pass, I have no idea.
This hot weather has taken it out of me, when I get in from work I just have no energy or enthusiasm right now to write a line of code. It's horrible being an overgrown Ewok in this weather.
I know if I forced myself to do write stuff, I'd just end up making a pile of buggy poo, so i figure it's best to leave it until I'm more in the mood, and just use the time to mull ideas over in my head. At least that way I can spot potential problems before I find out the hard way.
The weekend's basically taken up with either catching up on all the sleep I missed out on during the week, or doing things I somehow end up getting volunteered to do for other people :madashell:
So come Monday, I'm still tired, and my list of things to do just got even longer ..

@ Karlos
I really understand how you feel.. and me and my wife have our baby due midway through september.. No time, and even when i do have time, i have no idea how to use it even though there are lots of things i want to do. I suppose you just need to have a stiff upper lip and get one with it, im sure better days will come.

I can always find time for my amigas. I'm a student and have 6 weeks off for the summer, which means I have 6 weeks to play with the amigas! And I don't have a girlfriend or children to worry about, and my mum does all the stuff like the cleaning and cooking. lol
-
I know exactly how you feel. I work fking hard all week as a support engineer for a totally unreasonable customer, which means every evening I'm too tired to do anything. And there's always the guilt trip from the other half if I do try to sneak upstairs for a bit of Amiga-ing
At the weekends there's usually some tedious task to be carried out. This weekend it was a visit from the in-laws. Last weekend it was painting windows. The weekend before that it was a visit from (his) friends. Having pretty much every weekend booked up means I get no time to myself, or to my Amiga :madashell:
I end up having to book a "free" weekend in my diary to make sure I have some time to myself!

Work sucks the life out of me. If having to deal with cantankerous, nasty, lazy and rude people during my days don't bring my energy level down, other things will. Those would be the stress of bills and other obligations. So I guess when I do have time I really don't have "quality time" to enjoy them.
:-o They will press the big, shiny red button soon enough

hmmm, have to say that i prefer IE to FF anyday in terms of browser SWare. nm.
starting a new project. converting from the standard keyboard type 1200 case into a tower. thing is, i am going to have to extend the keyboard etc etc

Well I'm thinking of selling up exactly for this reason. My house is a tip, I have projects that I could work on that I'd be better off with the long run (i.e. they'd look better on my CV) and I'm getting no younger and should exercise more regularly than playing cricket every few weeks, plus I've just got an allotment, and it requires a lot of work!!!
Oh, and I asked out a girl I've liked for years on Saturday, and she said 'yes'! WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

At least I might then get some time to myself.

Why not get rid of job or maybe switch to part time work? My friend is quitting his job in November and moves to Thailand for two or three months to spend his unemployment money. Nice, eh?
-
Best advice I can give you is a simple time management thing.
Switch the television OFF!!!!!

I'd have to plug it in and switch it on first...

..I work on a sell desk of an investment fund for 3 afternoons per week and get some money.. I also study private university and have enough money so I don“t need to work more.. but guess what - do I have time for miggy? My tower system sits on the table at home (I live in the city during week) and the only time I can use it is weekend.. BUT when I got home for a weekend, my aunt always finds some work for me around our big house or her office.. so miggy goes aside.. I hope she will travel somwhere soon for a holiday.. :-P
..btw I am getting this LCD to get PAL.. http://www.alfacomp.cz/php/zbozi.php?akc=2&mnu=2&zob=2&pol=110&zbo=30818

Unless you win the lottery (And even then it had better be a big one) then it's best to just plan to have life bowl you over and really enjoy the free moments when you can.
I have Amiga projects, Home maintenance and remodel projects, Music projects, other computer projects and 7 kids to play with in my "Spare" time when I'm not cleaning up after them and repairing the damage they do day to day.
