Title: PCMCIA -> CF Speeds?
Post by: Brian on July 25, 2006, 11:44:05 PM
Can anyone tell me how is the CompactFlash in PCMCIA converter speed whise? I'd imagine it's slow (consulting my knowledge of the Overdrive HDD that is super slow even vs a 2.5" 4K2RPM internal HDD).

So can anyone fill me in? Is it worth using or is it yet another one of those "because I can" gadgets that'll just end up collect dust?

Which benchmarks do you want run?  Just "unpatched" diskspeed?    I have one for my PC that I can stick in for a few tests if needed.

IIRC it can do around 1MB/S

According to SysInfo it reads about 1 meg/second and operational-wise I'd have to say it feels about like a slow 2.5" hard drive.

I wouldn't use it to replace a hard drive but it's great for backups and file transfers when you can't or don't want to mess around with CD-ROMs or networks.

Reading the CF I got ~1,4MB/s I think that is pretty fast. Writing flash never breaks speed records. However todays more expensive devices can take respectable data rates.
