Title: Am I being paranoid or is this really suspicious?
Post by: techie on July 22, 2006, 05:15:35 PM
Hi all,
I've been looking for a good Amiga monitor on ebay to go with my new Amiga 1000 and I happened accross this auction 1084S monitor on Ebay (http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=140008537125&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=004) At first glance this looked pretty good, the guy has no negative feedback, he'd already answered a couple questions, and he's got a picture of the item up for auction. But after some more searching I came across this Second 1084S monitor on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.ca/Commodore-1084S-Monitor-for-the-Amiga_W0QQitemZ140008537670QQihZ004QQcategoryZ74945QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) Same guy selling it but it looks completely different from the other auction :inquisitive: So I sent him an email about it, he said that commodore made several different versions of the same monitor and that while they looked different they were internally about the same.

Now I know this in fact to be true, however, I decided to do  some more digging anyway and eventually came across this
1802 Monitor on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.ca/Commodore-1802-Monitor-for-the-C-64-128_W0QQitemZ140008535777QQihZ004QQcategoryZ74945QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) Again it's the same person but this time he's used the picture from the first 1084S auction I discovered to describe a 1802 monitor :-o

Now I should probably give the guy the benefit of the doubt but I can't help wondering if something is amiss. Am I just being paranoid or does this look a bit odd to anybody else  :-?

Hi Techie,

Don't worry there are a lot of different monitors. And yes the model he discribes with that photo is wrong.

I just looked up this site and there you can see al the model. http://www.zimmers.net/cbmpics/

Greetings Henk

Hi A1200Power,
Hmm...well I'm still a little iffy about this. I know I sound overly cautious but I just find the whole thing with the picture a bit odd.

I don't suppose you, or anyone else here, has dealt with this gamearena person before  :-?

Golden rule of Ebay: If in doubt, don't trade.

@Jabaruk1
PM sent :-)
Oh btw would I need an adaptor to use a UK monitor in Canada? Or is there just a switch on the back to change the power setting?

@Piru
That's a good rule to follow, but I still wonder if maybe I'm being a little paranoid in this case :-?

the seller says he aggrees to a local pick-up as an answer to a question. Usually that's a good sign cause scammers can never accept local pick-up. Of course it's better to check if the question in question is not bogus and asked by a real person. About the picture, he has got some stuff for sale and it's easy to upload a wrong picture when doing multiple sales.

@countzero
That's the thing; I don't want to judge this person too harshly just because they might have uploaded the wrong picture. At the same time I don't want to get ripped off  :shrug:

*sigh* okay I'm gonna take a big chance here and bid on the monitor despite my reservations.

First of all good luck.
Second, the advantage from my point of view is that you have a local pickup.
That is always good.
Third, i have had or have most of the Amiga monitors, so from experince as long as the tube is OK, the philips build are the easiest to get parts for,at least her up in northern Europe.
Just in case :-)

That looks like a Commodore 1802 monitor to me, and that will not work in RGB with the Amiga, don't get it unless the pic is just wrong and it is indeed a 1084...

Sorry.
Forgot to mention that that one if it is 1802 it will only work with composite, not rgb.
I believe the 1084 is what he wants from the first post anyway.

Well I guess I was getting all worked up about nothing. With 3 sec's left in the auction I was outbid by $1.00.   :lol:

Obviously he just uploaded the wrong picture.

High-value items like Powerbooks, Vaios, 40" Plasma screens - these are the things you need to be careful of (eg items 290010702930, 290010702857, 120012238374, 290010703017, 290010703178, 130009853450, 320009830567, 320009830894, 300010277031, 120012271872, 200010131303, 220009871346 and so on ad infinitum...).

  Where do you live in Canada?  I live in Alberta and I have a few 1084S's. I'd sell one to you for less than $50.  PMail me and we can discuss it.

Good advise! I've not bid on a few things due to doubt and probably missed a couple good deals, but OTOH I have never been ripped off.

@mpiva,
That'd be awesome. Private Message sent :-)

@redrumloa
I tend to agree but I really wonder if I'm being overly cautious sometimes.
