Title: A1200 Question
Post by: irishmike on July 21, 2006, 03:31:30 PM
Greetings again all:

I am about to obtain a second A1200.  My first one has the Blizzard 1230 expansion in it and the second will have no expansion.  I was wondering about fast ram on the one without the accelerator... it has just chipram.

Thanks for advice,

Mike

Hi, you have three options, a memory expansion that connects to the same port of the accelerators, exists boards to expand memory and add a FPU, or a PCMCIA expansion card, if my memory don't fail, it can accept cards up to 6 mb, i have one for my A600 of 2 mb. Exist other ways, simulate fast memory for programs that need fast memory, these programs split chip memory to simulate 1 mb of chip and 1 mb of fast, take a look to this program:

Don't bother with PCMCIA RAM expansion -> it gives new meaning to slow.......
Honestly, the best route is to just bite the bullet and get an accelerator.

Generally I'd say find an 030 and put some ram on it rather than just get a ram card. Fast ram alone will just about double the speed of certain operations on your 1200, but an 030 card makes your 1200 a much more useful machine, as I'm sure you know. Trouble is they seem to be a bit more expensive on Ebay these days.  :( Having said that I would ram cards are quite rare.

.... and If you do get another 030 you will be able to have evenly matched games of Doom and AB3D: TKG etc using a serial link-up. :)

P.S.
PowerMonger link up rocks.  :)

Yeah, I know the 030 Blizzard is a great thing.  Sold the one I had and bought my second 1200 with one plus SCSI.  I don't plan to buy another 030 for the second A1200 due to cost reasons.  It'll probably become backup parts for my first one.

Thinking of selling both of them and the external Plextor CD writer (SCSI) altogether to get funds to build up my A4000's... I'd like to get two of those working.  I haven't decided yet on this fully.

BTW: Have one PCMCIA Etherlink III (3c589D) that I could sell if someone wants it.  Needs the dongle.  I found a source for that so basically it is $5 plus shipping as it is or if I buy the dongle, it will be $10 plus shipping.  PMAIL if interested.

Kind of on the fence.  If I keep my A1200s, I will probably still build one of the A4000's eventually.

But I was just wondering.

Thanks for all the great response :-)

Mike
