Title: Help needed with Miami
Post by: rvrhijn on July 20, 2006, 10:28:29 AM
I've just bought an Amiga 1200 with a 3com ethernetcard (PCMIA). I've installed Miami, but when I run MiamiInit the procedure stops. My intention is to copy files form a pc to the amiga, so internet is not needed. In MiamiInit I give in the name of my device and it start looking for the dhcp server, which can't be found. But then I return to the screen where you can specify the name of the device, so I can't go any further because when I press continue the same thing happens. Can someone please help me? :-?

I would try to enter manually Static Ip adress (check pc for right subnet) and try that.. I have had problems getting dhcp to work myself...

And use MiamiDX...

I would recommend switching from Miami to AmiTCP, it's much faster. Here's a guide (http://www.acc.umu.se/~patrikax/amiga/guides/AmiTCP_Install/) to help set it up.

Thanks, but I don't see any possibility on the amiga site for a static ip.

I've been looking for Miamidx on the net but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

I've read about AmiTCP, and I've downloaded a demoversion from aminet, but I can't get it to the 1200 on disks.

If you're having difficulty with Miami then try AmiTCP 3.0b2 and the Installation Guide that fx linked to. I've tried it and it works really well.

EDIT: this package is 687k and so will fit on a floppy disk.

I have had my A1200T connected to DSL with Miami since 2000.
The static IP feature and the DHCP always seemed to work for me.

You will find Miami DX on Aminet.net .. :)

Maybe you should connect a cd-rom to the Amiga and transfer files from the pc that way.

and or get os3.9 and install the internet software... it has genesis built in.( same as amiTCP)  Worked for me.  without a cdrom drive this get much harder...

Thanks for the advice. I've installed AmiTCp 3.02b and it seems to work fine. However, I use Amiga Explorer and I still can't get a connection. When I use ping to check it gives a timeout.

@rvrhijn:

Most firewall software for Windows will block pings amongst other things.

Turning off the firewall doesn't work either.

The guide from fx was great. Thank you. I've had some luck so far: when I ping (from both the pc and the amiga) I get a response. The next problem is that Amiga Explorer keeps saying "error connecting with the Amiga server: TCP/IP socket not found".

Any suggestions?

You need to describe, in detail how all your hardware is networked together.  Once you do that I can tell you a good idea of what is wrong.

What kind of cable comes out of your Amiga ethernet port?
What does it plug into? (pc or router or ?)
How many network cables are plugged into the PC?

What is your Amiga's IP address?
What is your PC's IP address?

Are you 100% positive that ALL your PC firewalls are off?

I'm sure all the firewalls are off.

My configuration is:
Amiga 1200 HD.
3COM PCMIA T3 ethernetcard (3c589) plugged into a pc.
There's only 1 ethernetcable plugged into the pc.
The Amiga's IP address is 192.168.0.3
The PC's IP address is 192.168.0.2
Subnetmask is 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: none

Since your Amiga is plugged directly into the PC you must use a crossed ethernet cable, not a regular one.

Voila!  :-)

I wish it was that easy.....I'm using a crossed one

Is "Microsoft file and printer sharing" enabled on the PC?

Do you have more than 1 ethernet card in your pc?

Perhaps an onboard built-in one plus a PCI one?

Yes, "Microsoft file and printer sharing" is enabled.

There's only 1 ethernet card (onboard).

Are you running Samba on the Amiga?

Have you tried copying files to/from by using the PC?
(That is what I hafta do)

AmigaExplorer does not work with AmiTCP. Others had this problem, too.

But if you got AmiTCP configured, it should be very easy for you to configure Miami. It's much easier to navigate a self-explaining GUI than to answer the complicated questions of an installer which then creates broken scripts.

Thomas

No, I'm not running Samba on the Amiga.

What do you mean exactly bij copying files by using the PC?

Hi Thomas,

The reason I've tried AmiTCP is that I can't seem to configure Miami with my MiamiInit on my Amiga (see my first post). It simply doesn't go any further after searching for the dhcp server. Maybe you can help me out?

How exactly are the Amiga and PC supposed to be communicating?

You said you are getting pings which means the hardware aspect is working.

There must some type of "filecopying over a network" software running.  Which for me means "Samba".

I simply click on "My network places" on the WindozeXP machine and there is my A1200T listed.  I can then right click on any file on the PC or Amiga and select "Copy" to copy it.

I don't see your problem. Each of these "searching for xy" windows has a "cancel" and a "skip" button. A click on the "skip" button let's you continue without finishing the search. Only if you click on "cancel" or if you let the search fail you are dropped back to the previous step.

Anyway you don't need MiamiInit. You can as well enter the values into Miami's GUI.

Bye,
Thomas

He wants to run AmigaExplorer. It works similar to "My Network Places" but is much faster and much easier to configure than Samba.

Anything is faster than Samba.  Linux slothware at is finest.

So what dir is this AmigaExplorer software supposed to live in?  It is not on my OS 3.9 A1200T.

But that's just the problem: when I press skip I can't continue (by pressing the continue butto he starts looking again for the dhcp server)

You'r absoluty right, I've just entered the values in Miami's GUI. Miami goes online and AExplorer opens with a tcp/ip connection, but I still get the same message. From the PC I can't ping the ip of the Amiga anymore.

Which values did you enter ?

Title: Re: Help needed with Miami
Post by: rvrhijn on July 23, 2006, 07:21:11 PM
Hi Thomas,

I've entered the following values:

In Miami:
interface type Sana II Ethernet
IP statice 192.168.0.3
Netmask static 255.255.255.0
Gateway static 192.168.0.2 (I didn't exactly know what to enter here, so I've entered the IP of the PC)

When I use Miamiping and enter the IP of the Amiga I get a correct respons. When I pinr the IP of my PC I get the message "wrote 192.168.0.2 64 chars, ret=-1".

On the PC is Xp service pack 2 installed. I have 1 ethernetcard onboard (and a wireless pcicard). I connect the PC and Amiga with a crosses ethernetcable. When I ping 192.168.0.3 form the PC I get a timeout and no response.

When I start Aexplorer on the Amiga it opens a TCP/IP connection. When I start Aexplorer on the PC I get the message "TCP/IP socket not found".

Any idea what I'm doing wrong? i thougt ethernet wpuld be an easy way to connect teh PC and Amiga, but I'm getting a little desperate now...

I'm even thinking about buying a cdrom player to use for transfering files instead of TCP/IP.

It sounds to me like you have 2 different network interfaces in your PC.  You seem to have 1 that is wireless and 1 that is standard ethernet.  You can do that and it will work but you MUST set them to be on different subnets.

Please goto ControlPanel/NetworkConnections on your XP box.

You should see 2 different "Local Area Connections".

Please tell me the IP #'s of both of these Local Area Connections by double-clicking on them and looking under "Support".

*POOF* All ur probs r gone  :-)

Lan:

IP 192.168.0.2
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway ?

Wireless:

IP 192.168.2.3
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.2.1

Thanks ChaosLord. I didn't change the subnet but I disabled the wirelesscard and it works great now :-D

Your default gateway settings should probably be blank.
Mine are blank and my network works.
I have 2 Ethernet NICs in my xp box, the onboard one + a PCI one.
