Title: SCART Video Quality on LCD Monitor
Post by: bubba on July 17, 2006, 04:46:16 PM
I've been running my A1200 on a Samung 19" LCD (940mw) for about three weeks now via the RGB SCART connection.  The image via the SCART is pretty good (blows away composite, it also deinterlaces).  Graphics look very good, but I'm not happy with screen text.  I'm trying to determine if this is an issue with my cable or the image processing hardware in the LCD.

Basically, all text and other fine details have what I call a "halo".  For example, a black letter on a gray background will have a white/light gray outline.  This makes the text apper to glow. It's really annoying.  I've tried adjusting contrast, brightness, etc. but the glow is always there.  I don't see the same issue when using the composite or VGA input.

Any ideas?  I though SCART RGB would be very close to the same quality I had with my 1084s. It's hard for me to test the LCD on another piece of electronics since nothing in the US has SCART output.

I suspect my cable since it feels pretty cheap.  Can someone recommend a dealer where I can buy a high quality SCART lead for the Amiga?

Don't forget that LCDs only have one resolution and if you can't match that one, it will interpolate so it fits, which makes it look blurry. Just try running windows in 640x480 on it and it will also look very blurry.

Also they sample the analogue signal, which a regular analogue monitor doesn't have to, which amplifies all distortions by several grades.

Btw, see if there are any noise-filters or anything image-enhancing crap which you can turn of for the scart-input. Atleast LCD TVs atleast are filled with that kind of stuff, which degrades GUI stuff.

There can be issues with your cabling too - often the el cheapo Amiga RGB cables doesn't have coaxial cabling for the red, green, blue and sync signals.

Also, they often for some idiotic reason have resistors connected in series with the red, green, blue and sync signals which is completely wrong - this will in combination with the 75Ohm termination resistors in the TV/Monitor/etc create a voltage divider and make the picture dark compared to other sources as the signals from the Amiga isn't 0.7Vpp anymore.

If you have to turn up the contrast on your TV/Monitor/etc when using the Amiga to match the other sources, you have these resistors.

Bubba, Scart will interface to just about anything if you have the right plugs on the other end of the cable. What sort of other signal outputs DO you have ?

I doubt very much it will be the SCART cable.

Play with the different control settings on your monitor, check for sharpness settings, filtering etc. There should be some setting which talks about CLOCK and this usually is used to remove shadowing.
