Title: p96speed on Voodoo 3 problems
Post by: MASACREWILL on July 17, 2006, 02:22:41 PM
..hi guys!

..before few weeks I have finally got my A1240 an Mediator pci LT4 card + other cards. I run OS 3.5 and p96 in 1280*1024*32 and when I run p96speed test the machine crashes when running "write pixel (8)" test.
I have also problem with speed of screen switching between WB and Dopus (or Cygnus). It takes 3 seconds to redraw it!

..I haven`t find enough time to try maybe reinstalling a p96 and upgrade mediator and voodoo drivers (I am going to do that on weekend).. so I will report then.. anyway thanx for any ideas..

My guess:
Single 1280*1024*32 screen takes 5242880 bytes of video memory. Mediator can see 8MB window of the memory at the time. If you switch between two such screens, Picasso96 must swap some display memory to make it happen. With the poor bus speed of the Mediator, it really can seem a bit sluggish.

So, also im guessing if he uses screens smaller than 4+4MB it will be faster?
with 32bit 1024x768*(4x8) will be 3.1MB each screen

..thanks for Your comments..

I have read on some other forum here that screenswapping is quite slow on Voodoo 3 2000, which has 16MB VRAM only.. unfortunately any lower (non native) resolution looks pretty bad on my LCD monitor..

What's the point of using 32-bit screens anyway? Stick to 16-bit ones and it should be a lot faster, and you won't notice any difference.

Another thing worth noticing is that you REALLY should try to get your hands on Picasso96 v2.1b if you are currently only running the common v2.0.

The updated emulation.library and picasso96api.library fixes some issues, amongst the most important the one which in v2.0 prevents applications from automatically selecting the best screenmodes from the ones available (fixes the intro in Earth2140 and makes ShowAmiga96 perfectly usable and so on).

I do notice the difference. Things looks much prettier when running 32-bit as soon as there are quite some colours on the screen. But, yes, it is quite much slower in higher resolutions. In 1024*768 I haven't noticed that much difference in the speed, though.

..I will try that p96 2.1b which I have already downloaded..   :-)

..so I have installed p96 2.1b, but it fixed nothing (p96 speed utility still crashes on Write Pixel (8) test).. but when I removed SB 128 and deleted its libs and other stuff, it has solved my screen speed switching problem - now I run OS 3.5 at 1280*1024 60Hz with no problem and screens switch lightning fast..    :-)

@MASACREWILL

Interesting. I was just about to comment on Pirus thought on screenswitching being rather sluggish at such high resolutions... because I haven't really noticed any slowdowns while switching 1280*1024*32 screens while playing around with my Mediator/Voodoo3-2000 solution. It might be that they are there and pretty visible, but just me not having noticed them. I think I will have to check it out just to be sure...

..well, I think You would surely noticed 2 seconds slowdowns when switching between Your DoPus and WB screens.. now it is good.. but problem with p96 remains and games included with  Warp3D demo just crash my system bringing some weird messages up.. and I have to reboot than..

Warp3D is the one 'pain in the arse' application to get running on your Amiga. I did try to install it some 5-6 times, but with no luck whatsoever. I read every manual I could find, asked around on forums and heck... I did nothing wrong. Then I got so fed up with the whole thing that I simply copied all the 'necessary' files from a friend. I copied EVERYTHING from him that had to do with Warp3D... the libs... his configs... everything... (it seemed exactly like my setup), and lo and behold... what have we? A working Warp3D setup. Yes. I haven't touched it since and i NEVER will. I just extract my little archive with Warp3D related files onto my HD each time I do a reinstall (which, by the way, isn't THAT often).

Have you tried anything Warp3D related other than the demos, by the way?

..no, I haven`t.. but that "Gears" test and the other test RUN (but gears is terribly slow IMO).. could you send me Your Warp3D files eventually then?
