Title: Best C64 emu
Post by: amiga4001 on July 13, 2006, 08:40:39 PM
So I am in a retro mood.
I want to play turrican on the C64 but was thinking maybe possible on an emulator on my amiga?
I do have an ppc if that helps for speed as an graphiccard.
Or is speed/compatibility not enough?
What are you guys reccomandations.

the best C64 emulator for the amiga is Magic 64....get it on aminet...but you have a better option on the PC side and is named VICE which is lot better than Magic 64

MagiC64 is absolutely fantastic, but it's shareware and limited to 10 minutes use without a keyfile.

With the PPC option, you might want to look into Frodo. You could probably also boot into MorphOS and run its version of VICE (http://www.amidog.se).

CCS64 is also fantastic.

A port for AmigaOS would be great!

Also note that VICE is a package with emulators for:
* C64 (as you may already know)
* C128
* VIC-20
* Many PET models
* Plus/4
* CBM-II

also has tools to manipulate d64 images in various ways

pretty complete emulator also, runs damn near anything

MagiC64 rocks!!!  Runs great on a 060...

Well I wouldn't mind paying for a key if it works allright.
But problem is now that it freezes on startup.
Maybe I should checkout frodo?
Or is there a problem with 060 and magic64?
Too bad I can't run morphos only mediator.

amiga4001,

try to disable one or more caches of the 68060 before you start Magic64
for example....dusable only scalar cache or branch or data cache
experiment a bit
anyways you will not problem with speed disabling one or more caches of the 060 cause magic64works fine on a 030

also

check what says on magic64 guide on the sound part:

"playsid.library will not work with 68060"

read all what says there

my suggestions:

delete playsid.library from your libs directory and check if that is the problem
get 6581sid.library on aminet if you don't have it installed

pending

bye, Laser

If you use PPC, VICE provides the most accurate emulation, much better than Frodo.

Fast summary of most C64 emulators available for Amiga:

Best C64 emu      - VICE.
Fastest C64 emu   - MagiC64.
Crapiest C64 emu  - A64.
Slowest C64 emu   - Frodo.

Crapiest C64 emu - A64.

Naw... I had SOME results with A64.  The crappiest would be the C64 module for Emplant, as it was mostly vapor, and the beta I found never even managed to emulate a READY prompt properly.  :lol:

The rest of your list I agree with, but I'd like to add:

Coolest C64 emu - PocketC64 (for PocketPC)

A complete and darn near perfect* C64 that fits in my shirt pocket?!  I'd have killed for much less back in my youth.

(*It doesn't run quite as many things as VICE does [heck, I think VICE runs more than a real C64 does!], but what it does, it does a great job with.)

I've seen a couple crappier ones. Although the A64 has problems with most games, it's still the fastest C64 emulator (quickly emulates badly ;-)). I usually have a choice to run a game fast and inaccurate on A64 or accurate and slow on Magic64. A few games even run perfectly in A64. Also, A64 has more of a real C64 feeling for me because the BASIC screen has the right colours, border and no delays when typing. On my Amiga, Magic64 border doesn't work (shifts screen to bottom corner) and the BASIC colours are wrong.

So if you've got a slow Amiga, still give A64 a try.

I`ve used Frodo on AmigaPPC, which runs fine (is there a full screen version?), but failed to load some tape/disk images.
On the other hand, Vice on PC is fantastic! Not to mention the Pal emulation and the pixel smoothing that gives you a TV-experience feeling (I hope it has the same options on MOS, as well).

MagiC64 works perfectly for me on my 060 based systems.  I did have to use a different SID library to get it to run 100% though.

It'll be hard getting the key file. I tried for ages to contact the makers. The website they give in the readme file just had a link to porn.
Frodo version 2 is the emulator I use on my A1200 060. To get the best speeds you need either a graphics card or if you use Fblit and Blazewcp (plus other speed up hacks) you can get it running at 100% with a frame skip of 2 or 3.
The most recent frodo on the amiga is compatible with more games but a lot slower.
Oh and dont use playsid.library(unless u have a really powerful amiga) for sound use the other sid library as its much quicker.
Alternativly you could get yourself a real C64 and get one of the cables that lets u transfer games from Amiga to C64 giving you the best speed, sound and frame rate for your games :-D

Yes it has.

Are there any decent C64 emulators that will run half way respectably on an 040/25 with graphics card?

Oh. Yeah. I should have been more clear in my first post - that's why MagiC64 is tough to recommend. If it was still possible to register it, it'd be hands down the best option for emulating C64 on Classics. And I'd have registered it ages ago.

Tried the frodo emu and magic64 demo.
Frodo seems to be more happy with my setup..no freezes etc..
Downloaded a few games .d64 and tried to run them.
They load in nicely but then don't run.
I did try blue max turrican and blue baron.
Something I should do with these files to get them going?
Already understood it may not have a capital in the filename.
I also used the more accurate versions of frodo (sc etc..)
Did also see turrican3 for C64 on C64.com thought it was never released for C64???

Magic64 is a pretty good emu for 68k, but if you have ppc, frodo is damn good, the warpos version running at 100% c64 speed.    Magic64 lacks any kind of decent 1541 emulation so alot of .d64 based games wont work at all. Frodo has much better 1541 emulation.   VICE is fantastic (the best?) on pc.  dont remember having a warpos version to try on my miggy.

When I`ll have some spare time, I`ll try to install the latest version of MOS. It has lots of interesting apps! :-)

Im confused you say they load in nicely but dont run?? So how do you know they loaded in nicely??
Some D64's dont work without 1541 emulation. Others wont work if you use LOAD"*",8,1 because the first file isnt the game file. So if you havent already use this method when loading games
LOAD"$",8
LIST
then use the arrow keys to go up to the line with the game file on and type LOAD at the front and ,8,1 at the end
then when its loaded type RUN. Im sure it crashes out with an error message if the game is not compatible without the 1541 emulation
