Post by: cycloid on May 06, 2003, 06:50:24 PM
i just gained a free 1200 with 20mb hard drive and on powering it up discoverd just how ****ing fast it is compared to my 040 16mb model ... i suspect it's mainly down to the AGA chipset and the number of colors running otherwise my existing 1200 runs

dopus in wb replacement mode @ 128 cols i think
mmulib doing a few things like rom -> fast ram
fblit etc

but i suspect the real speed eaters are visual prefs and newicons..

so, any tips on making my faster amiga as fast as the slower amiga!?!?!

Check out the user-startup to see how much is loaded on startup. The more is loaded the longer it takes. Makes sense, doesn't it ?! Also check out env-archive in the prefs dir. That is always loaded into Ram on startup and the more is loaded the longer it takes for you to wait ... makes also sense ...

I've got my WB on 32 colours, which is just enough to make Newicons bearable.  Much more than that, and you can really see the strain on the custom chips.

yeah i had it on 128, so i've knocked it down to 32 ... which meant reconfigging visualprefs but i think it looks better now! i also realised that i'd somehow turned the rom->ram mapping off when messing with mmulib one time! seems better now! hurrah
