Hi,
I have a 1200 with it's original 40MB IDE hard drive, running OS3.1 with 3.1 ROM's. I have been considering using OS3.9. I don't particularly want to put another hard drive in the machine at the moment, and would like to know how much space 3.9 would occupy on a hard drive, and what would be the minimum partition size I could use?
I mostly just use the machine for midi sequencing, and the odd floppy disk game, so the system partition is not likely to need much more space after the initial installation.
Thanks a lot for any advice.

After a fresh minimum install a while back on my A4000T, 3.9 occupied a little bit over 60MB.
Plus, 3.9 CD is 467MB, mostly because of non-essential extras like movie trailers and msuic files.
I don't think your 40MB HD will make it.

Cheers Nagaflas, thanks for the info. I might just hold off on 3.9 then. I just wanted to taste it really. Don't have any real need for it.
Thanks a lot,
Oli

40Mb is perfectly fine. I managed to squeeze a huge amount of stuff on my old 40Mb drive. I now have a 40Gb drive, but my 3.9 partition uses up only 18Mb (my main 3.1 partition uses up about 75Mb, but has loads of unnecessary extra stuff).
Besides the Workbench, here's a list of some of the stuff I squeezed on my old 40Mb drive (40 megabytes, NOT gigabytes)
Miami MUI
YAM IBrowse
Newicons VisualPrefs
MagicMenu TitleShadow
PowerSnap Checkmate
ModePro Scout
SnoopDOS GoldED
rainbow SimpleFind3
ScreenShell DrivePrefs
env-handler MrCopper
NISClock WindowToFront
Iconify Voodoo-X
WizArc Hex
Beast Music Synth/Swinth/Synth.sid
Klidex Checkmate
Visage TotalCalc
PageLiner Zoom
VideoPoker AddTools
BorderBlank SystemPatch
Skick AHI
RunFromWB VersionWB
Clip DaysBetween
DoIcon ShowIcon
JPG2DCTV Iconian
VirusZ CompareDirs
EaglePlayer & Misc Music Misc Good Mods
PPaint Arexx Shell
SampleZ SongPlayer
Shadow of the Beast Faery Tale
Zeewolf II Speedball 2
Ruff'N'Tumble Fractal
ABCDir!
I also had all my "eye-candy" stuff and still had about 6Mb left for internet cache. You just have to keep what's necessary and not fill up on crap.
Edit: my list appears tabbed nicely in two columns when I edit the post, but is squashed together when displayed in the page! Just try to imagine it as two columns ;-)
If you don't need 3.9, don't get it. It's not worth it.

If you just install OS3.9 without the backdrops, then it will easily be able to fit on your 40 MB drive; I think it takes around 10-12 MB then, but I'm not 100% sure.
If I were you I'd just make the whole harddrive as one partition, and then create an extra drawer for your midi stuff.
-
DoctorQ is right on the money I think... with a small HDD like that there's no reason to partision, just add a works drawer or whatever on the one big system partision.
My relativly clean OS3.9 install takes 24MB, but I have the 9MB backdrops installed aswell as personal big picture and Picasso96 and a CDFS so I'd think 10-12MB is probably the minimum the install will take. If you nessesarily want to partision the HDD then make it 15MB and you'll have a little room extra for libs and other stuff.
Personaly I'd look around for a bigger HDD for the machine though. Anything 2GB+ would do it more justice and make room for some WHDLoad games so you didn't have to play floppydisk jokey. :-D

You are quite right; I made a spare RAD test boot partition for me with essential RTG setup and it is a little over 10 MB.

I have 3.9 installed on my 40 meg hard drive although I have a second SCSI2 hard drive for all of my apps. :-(
-
For the cost of a used/referbished >20 gig hard drive these days on ebay why wouldent you get another drive its well worth the $20 you would spend.
-
Hey that's right! You can use bigger than 4 gig hard drives when you've got AmigaOS 3.5 or 3.9 installed. (Just make sure your boot partition is smaller than that. ;-) )

Hi folk,
Thanks a lot for the suggestions and info. I'll look into it further.

BS!
60 mB?
Then it never was "a fresh minimum install"!!!
A "minimum install" of OS 3.9 should not require much more space than 10 mB on an harddrive, IIRC.
But I can have a look at my OS3.9 CD tonight when I come home and tell you exactly what the minimum requirements are to install OS 3.9...

Hehe - he does not want to copy the entire CD to his HD - he just wants to install OS 3.9!

I think it *WILL* make it...

Hello Oliver,
You don't mention if you have an accelerator, you need
at least 8 Meg Fast Ram.When I upgraded my A1200 with 4.3 Gig Hard Drive, I installed the original 40 Meg drive in my
CD32/SX1 with 8 Meg Fast Ram that's the maxinum you can
upgrade SX1.Then I installed OS3.9 it eat most my chip ram
and I had about 4 Meg's of fast ram left and used most of my Hard Space. And boy it was painfully slow that I just ditch it and reinstalled OS3.1 again.I wouldn't recommend
OS3.9 with out RTG GFX Card.Even AGA is bad hate to think
about O/ECS users Thanks Merv :-?
