I just won an auction for a nice 2.5" 4.0 gig hard drive
for my Amiga 600.
Does the ribbon cable supply power for a laptop or do I need something special?
I know 3.5" drives need to have a 'Y' off the floppy drives power.

A 2.5 inch HDD with the proper 2.5 inch HDD cable can be installed with just that cable and no others.

Power is supplied through the 44 pin ribbon cable, you don't need an additional power connection.

Now you have to wonder if you have a HD cradle in your A600 (some do, some dont) and if the holes on your hard drive will line up or if you will have to use an elastic band.
-
I dont think theres a cradle. Ill have to figure something out
-
you might need extra RAM, for large HDDs, esp. if you make several partitions.
-
Spare HD cradles can usually be found on ebay or:

I was lucky. My A600 came with a cradle :) I have 1MB extra RAM in the trapdoor (total of 2MB RAM).
Not sure what you are on about with the alignment though? Mine appears to be ok.

You can also pry to have the good kick that handle correctly the HDD !! (2.05)

Yeppers I have 2.05 roms and extra 1mb in trapdoor with clock.
When I bought my 600 it came with a hard drive already , a modified 3.5" to sit on top.
Figures during shipping the logic board got fubared.
I was able to order a replacement drive to move logic boards and hope it works.
Its only a gig'er but has adf2disk and stuff on it which I dont want to loose.
I just ordered a 4.1 gig laptop drive for inside and a 2.5" ribbon cable from apple to make connection short.
Next I will add 3.1 roms probably.
