Title: WHDLOAD
Post by: Desolator on May 06, 2003, 09:30:16 AM
I've used this program on my WinUAE installment (with my own extracted ROM's, thank you.), but never tried it on my real Amigas. Does an unexpanded A1200 (with HD ofcourse) be able to run it or does it need more RAM to get running?

And while I'm at it, is there a program to downgrade an A1200 to A500 standards, so some games work on it? I've heard people saying that there is software that can do it, but never really looked into it since I already own a A500, but would be nice to be able to play most games on the same computer. :)

Hi Desolator,

Some smaller programs should work fine with
WHDLoad on an unexpanded 1200.

There are a few programs that will "softkick"
the 1200 to use the 1.3 rom. In my experience
though, I have been able to run most programs
by using "degrader"...I've only come across
a few that absolutely nedded the kickstart
relocater (mostly old demos if I remember).

Quite a lot of WHDLoad installs require a little bit more ram than the original floppy-based version.

On top of that, you'll have workbench and all sorts of other stuff in memory when you run a WHDLoad installed game that you wouldn't normally.

So, in most cases, you'll need a little extra fastram to get WHDLoad installs going on otherwise unexpanded machines.

Hmmm...let me change it from "smaller programs"
to "really small programs". :)

Allright, time to finally buy a turbocard with some RAM then... ;) (especially since I got hold of UFO original, which is slower than a snail on my A1200.)

Disabling the Preload option wich is default on 99% of installs will save memory too since the disk images wont be put into ram.

The downside is, youll get OS swaps between each loaded segment wich can make the games take longer to load then off the real floppies hehe.

This effect is Highly apparant when trying to run some installs on my 2mb a600 ;)

I've just started playing with WHDLoad on my
CD32+SX-1. Assuming I can actually get something installed correctly (IE, my original disks aren't corrupt) my 4Mb of FAST is plenty. Flashback, EOB2, and Populous work splendidly, but there are OS Swaps. Not many though.

To get absolutely everything working, you'll need 1.3, 2.0, and 3.1 ROM images and most installs need an XFD package with supplementary libs.
