Title: do you remember your first internet session?
Post by: neuroflip on June 22, 2006, 11:11:06 AM
Mine was at university, with a vt-220 (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=22337) running a VMS session and browsing with Lynx...

I remember searching Aminet the first time... wow! a great soft repository and everithing for my a500!!!

it was 15-16 years ago... and now i continue browsing aminet. it sounds graceful thinking about the time of life utility of this type of things.

I first got onto the internet in 1995 with an email address on (now defunct) sid.net, which was actually a popular BBS here in the Atlanta area.  I FTP'd some files, etc, from URLs out of a book on virtual reality.  And I did this using my Commodore 64(!) using an 80-column "emulated" terminal and 1200bps modem :-)

First directly on the internet experience was a UNIX shell account on some university machine (some freenet), which I accessed from my high school.

Ah, memories...

Probably 1993 at University using Spry Mosaic browser, and a usenet reader which I don't remember the name of.

I remember hardly any of the websites I used to visit had domain names, so I had to write down lots of IP addresses.  And almost all websites didn't have any graphics just text.  I used to download at between 0.3 - 1.0KB/second.  Anything over 200KB was considered a big download.

Hmmm....   First INTERNET session?  Egads... That's a LONG time ago.  I... uhm... acquired (yeah, that's it) a list of phone numbers, baud rates, and terminal settings that happened to be available to some teachers at the local school system in the mid-to-late 80's.  I had no idea what they were to.  As a punk kid who enjoyed slacking off and getting away with it, personally, I was hoping it was the attendence / grading / records systems.  Plugged the phone number an settings into CCGMS and found myself at the at a dial-in terminal to Merit/Michnet.  Poked around on there a bit and started realizing this was a rather large network (ya don't say...  To my defense, I was probably only 12 or 13 years old...).   Seemingly nothing useful to my quest of getting my parents off my back about my grades and homework, I quickly lost interest in things like the weather center in Ann Arbor (MI).  I kept the settings sheet, though and would poke in from time to time to see if I found anything of interest.

I graduated high school in '92, and by the end of that summer, my friend and I shut down our last BBS, and I sold off a bunch of equipment, including my 9600 baud modem a few months later.  (early '93, I'd guess)...  The local BBS scene for Amiga was pretty stale.  I'd been on IRC and a few multi-line boards, but I grew tired of those, and didn't really need the 9600 for them, anyhow.   I needed some money, so out the door went the modem.  Didn't regret it a bit at the time.

In late 1993, I sat down in the PC lab at the university.  Hmm....  What's this new "MOSAIC" icon?  HOLY @%)*@*@ this is cool!!!  I nose around a bit and learn that the first Amiga beta Mosaic version was just available for download a few days earlier.  After leaving the lab, I stopped by Best Buy and picked up a new 14.4k modem.  (ah, credit cards, a wonderful thing...)  Then it was off to hours (and days) of trying to configure AmiTCP.  (I had previously been using a dial-in to a TTY shell -- NOT using PPP -- this PPP and TCP configuration thing was a rude awakening.  Then, DNS?  grumble, grumble...  pilfer more information.)

But, alas, it was all working.  Albeit, slowly.  Haven't really left the internet, since.

My first time on the net, or at least chatting anyway (with an Amiga) I think I was using BlackIRC on my CD32 with SX-1 in 1996 I think. (of course before this I had used PC to browse and use AOL or mIRC)

It was an awesome feeling..it was a BlackIRC channel..I spoke to some German dude who was alone in some channel........he fortunately spoke english and explained to me why no one was in the channel...........I felt like me and him were the only people left in the world hehe.  I then Tried AmIRC and went to some amiga channel and server (Cant remember the name of server or channel) but there was some dude named LIZARD and maybe another guy named Jester........it had alot of people...about 10 or 15 anyway....which made me happy.

Still to this day I think AmIRC has a different and better feeling than any IRC client on any platform.

I remember being a Demon Internet customer when you could finger a certain machine and get a list of all the other subscribers in less than a screen full. Must have been about '92 ish?
ISTR they included email addresses too, what trusting times :-D

For non UK readers Demon became probably the UKs biggest ISP although they later declined.

I went with a friend (Hi Legerdemain!) to his brothers work, where they had Sun machines running Mosaic (I guess? Or could it have been Netscape?).

Anyhow, I remember us mostly using the "What's cool" button (in whatever browser it now was we were using) to find websites, and surfing lots of Calvin and Hobbes websites. Those where the times. :)

Logging onto the old GEnie system back in the 90's with my A500, and later A2000, which I bought off the GEnie online fleamarket.

Airwarrior on an unexcelerated A2000 at 9600 baud was a ton of fun. Gemstone was a also a good way to waste huge amounts of time.

Does anyone still know if they still run the old airwarrior program online

@neuroflip: thanks alot, brings back a lot of good memories!

I guess at school or in the local internetcafe. Around 96/97. Downloaded all the new things from aminet, as long as they fitted on my DD disks.

Waited for one more year when cable internet became available. To be sure I first tried in at a friends place, but he lost all the details for his internet account and he blamed it on my Amiga that it didn't work. After a week, I saved all my courage to order a internet connection myself, still being a bit in doubt if it would work on my Amiga. But it was unbelievable, I had it running with Miami within 30 min! I was stunned :-o WWW here i come!

Aaah, good times

Q-link, I think in 1985 with C64 and 300 baud.  Sometimes there was more than 10 people on line.  I use to get a book on what software was online, to download.  I use to get mad because the people with the 1200 baud (real fast modems) would kick me offline.  When Q-link went off, they sent me a letter to tell me if you pay $100.00, they would give me a life time membership, they were some other PC company I think American, but they became AOL.  I used the bbs a lot for the Amiga.  I use to go on one called Dark Horse which would get software many weeks or months before it would become public, one of the best ones was called X-It.

First Internet session? Late 1991 or early 1992 whilst at college - before there was any WWW!

Was using Kermit on a DOS-only HD-less 8086-based PC, first had to connect to the local VAX then use a program called "PDSoft" that would connect to the lancs.pdsoft (later HENSA) public domain software directory to retrieve files.

Then had to transfer those via Kermit directly to a 5.25" floppy, then had to find a PC with both 3.5" and 5.25" drives to make the transfer... Those were the days!

Got my first full net access whilst working in 1994/1995 and remember those first versions of Mosaic very well (and all the hassle of DOS-based packet network drivers, installing Win32s into Windows 3.1, and all the other fun and games).

Does anyone else remember when Yahoo! used to be on akebono.stanford.edu, and when searching for files meant sending off email requests to archie servers??!

My net access at home came in 1996 when I got my A1200 online with Demon Internet. Haven't looked back since, though it's a shame the Amiga browsers are still stuck in 1996!  :-)

Hm, my first was with some command line text browser (probably lynx, but I'm not sure) on a 386 pc with a 14k4 modem, it was 1990 or something I think. Downloaded some juvenile office humour picture from some finnish bbs or something like that. (I was like 10yo back then so I don't know it exactly anymore).

Early 90's with an A2000/GVP22mhz/14.4modem with a SLIP/Text/console account. Used AmiTCP. Eventually found AMosaic(Crashamundo version).

Was very interesting and much better than Fido or using Datapac network with a 2400 baud modem to dial into compuserve...

Sometime in 1996/97 at my school in Italy, IIRC... browsing Aminet with loads of CrossDos formatted disks :-D

In 1998 I bought a 33.6k modem for my A1200 and a yearly subscription to an ISP, it cost me a fortune both the subscription and the phone bills, but I think it was well worth it.

Web was soo nice back then... No js, flash, css crap... Pages loaded faster with the 33.6k than they do today on broadband. Sad, really.
Not to mention that you could browse any website with the good old Voyager NG 2.95...

AOL version 2.x on a 386SX with 2400bps modem. Remember the dreaded "adding artwork" message? That's when I'd go in the other room and play Megaman for a bit. I messed around on Prodigy a little before that but I'm not sure if you could access the internet through Prodigy at that time.

Depending on what is to be understood by "internet session", I'd have a few possibilities.

Early 90s I've been active a bit on some Usenet groups, on comp.sys.amiga.____ amongst others. My first true E-mail adress (venco@foxhunt.xs4all.nl) was via a Dutch BBS, around 1993/1994 I believe. My first steps on the WWW must have been around mid-1995, when I went to college and they had a lot of PC's connected to the Internet.

I can't really remember if I first saw the WWW at uni or on my Amiga though.

My first internet session was also the first time I ever used Windows. It was 1995 at university, using Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and Netscape (IE didn't yet exist).

One of the first things I did was do a search for places to order Amiga software (I hadn't used my Amiga 500 since late 1991 because of lack of software). I ordered Beast 3 - my first online purchase (but sent a cheque - nobody used credit cards online).

One of the second things I did was check out the porn I'd been hearing so much about. I remember clicking on a button to see a picture and waiting as it displayed verrrrrry slowly, drawing line by line. I'd be sitting there saying "hurry up, damn it", but by the time it got to the girl's neck, somebody would walk by and I'd have to quickly close the window. Either that, or there would be a communication error at the most unfortunate moment. I never did see much.

I was at work in Norwich. I worked for an estate agent and they decided to get the internet in 1996...  We looked at serious stuff for about 10 minues then the P*rno!

Disgracefull - I then bought a Dreamcast and surfed the net from home at about 56k in '98....

A penny a minute and it was nice and easy!  It seems strange there is nothing like this now - it was almost plug and play (into your TV) internet browsing, very cheap.

Reckon I started in 1993 in Cambridge University where my brother was. Must've been a few years before I got my own connection. I remember using Mosaic, I think it was - may have been Netscape 2? - and thinking that the Aminet was amazing and that there were really cool websites devoted to Frontier: Elite II which I was playing at the time.

Rush onto 1995 for my first connection - my trusty A1200 with a rather expensive Blizzard 1230-II @50MHz and a whopping 4MB of FastRAM. £200 bought me a PCMCIA ethernet card which I could connect to the (Aberystwyth) university network. Of course I had a heck of a job persuading the sysadmin (who on occasion still calls me Amigaman when I bump into him) that it wasn't going to nuke the network like Macintoshes did at the time, and nor was it about to slow down the entire network like Doom did. I had to cart my 1200 all the way down to Computer Services where he connected me up to a packet-sniffing laptop to make sure it was all working fine - except it wasn't because that particular ethernet card didn't have a MAC address so it did nothing. When I eventually figured out it needed a MAC address I told the sysadmin who was rather shocked because he thought MAC addresses were unique to each adapter in the world! Still he connected it up and it all worked fine in nicely compliant fashion.

That 1200 lasted half a year before I upgraded to my A4000 with another expensive network card and a very expensive CV64 and a bit more RAM (no prizes for guessing where my student loan went).

Ah, the good old days. Kinda! Setting up AmiTCP was sooo much fun.

Incidentally, the 1200 is now my Dad's occasionally used Amiga, the Blizzard is in my gaming A1200 and my 4000 is still working fine but with PPCs and stuff in it.

Well i was doing the BBS thing as early as ~1985. After taking a few years away from computers altogether, my first internet experience would have been on Win95 with an early Netscape Navigator. What did I spend my first night on the internet doing? Searching the THOUSANDS of colorful and informative Commodore 8bit sites :-D Stayed up all night, literally.

About '95ish, GEnie setup some means of getting on the internet through their network, so, you could get a text version of the internet. It was kind of lame, so I didn't bother with it much, but at least you could get on with a plain 9600 modem and unexpanded Amiga.

Al Gore was still VP.

There were many good BBSs around town for playing TradeWars and file sharing.  Used Ncomm.

Anyway, I heard about a local private ISP for $25 a year (they lasted about 6 mounths) and decided to take a chance.  I ordered Aweb and Miami from Software Hut I think. I couldn't believe how easy it was to set-up.

I think it was running on my A500, A570 with SCSI-TV, I still have this, my first computer.

My first experience was with an A1200 with Microbotics 1230XA and an external 58k modem that never worked faster than 9600 baud. Was fun, just dialing the phonenumber and log in, piece of cake, just a bit very slow :boohoo:
Then came civilisation and I got an A1200 in a plastic Infinitiv tower with Xsurf and a whopping Blizzard 1230/4. We finally got broadband in our small village and I desperately wanted that   The guy from the internet company came to install the hardware, cable modem and 15m of ethernet cable, but when it came to install the software it suddenly became a bit more complicated  8-) Eh, no Windows  :getmad: No MacOS  :getmad: Eh, time to call the callcenter   Okay, I have an Amiga 1200 and want to have the necessary information to get on the internet with Miami Deluxe or Genesis. Eh ... Amiga ??? No Windows installed ??? Oops   "Boss !!!!" ... Boss came on the line, explained the same thing, got a long period of confusing silence and finally he decided to call the bigger boss   Got him on the phone and explained the whole thing again for the fourth time. After another moment of silence I got the annoying answer "Sorry but we are not allowed to give support to eh, Amiga computers" :madashell:
Great service  :madashell:
Lucky for me a friend gave me the phonenumber of another Amiga freak on the other side of the country that had an A4000 with ethernet card that was able to supply me the info I needed to go online ... and the rest was a new world that opened to me  :-)
