i decided that there are exactly two big hurdles that keep me from using only amiga os:
- browser with stylesheets support
- java support
are there any other obstacles in the way?
well, at least a great new thread :)
-
I'd say that the basic obstacles would be the lack of a modern web-browser and an office suite.
Those are a must.
Then there's tons of other, minor obstacles...such as the lack of useful general software.
-
in principle the software is all written already. it only needs to be ported.
-
Hi,
don't forget to add :
no support for M$ document with Macro
no DV input support
no WM9 HD, QT7 HD... support
no true USB2 full speed support
...

whats that at all? i never heard of DV input, WM9 HD and QT7 HD...

Just?
Newsflash: It doesn't make it any smaller task. Lots of people have tried to port mozilla for years, and has gotten nowhere (lets be honest here). The port of openoffice has gone as far as getting icons drawn for the app.
In many cases porting requires writing some new code, aswell.

#1 obstacle is cost of Amiga hardware, which seems to be about 10x the price of comparable PC components
Then if I won the lottery and decided to buy up the best Amiga hardware that could be found, I think I'd still be lacking the XVID codec I need for watching Japanese dramas
-
@AGSzabo : In which planet do you live ? :)
DV input and its stack : IEE1394 For Digital Video acquisition use (DV Cam, D8, DVHS, DVD-R/RW, FW equipement...).
WM9 HD : HD DVD Codec with DRM for HDTV with HDMi/DVI-d
QT7 HD : Quicktime 7 HD codec
"Motion Compensation Video" for smooth vidéo playback
Full speed real USB2 and not a pseudo USB1 full speed.
JAVA support
Real Firewall
....
@Damagex : which anim ? Xvid isn't partially supported by Frogger and DvPlayer ?
-
Those obstacles can be taken if you use a remote-login tool. You can use your amiga for all other tasks. So what if you 'cheat' using a PC ? Just stash it out of sight.
:)

there are news announces concerning new software for os 4 every day. thus the situation cant be that worse. i am not just optimistic, i consider facts.

i already have a pc put out of sight and acting as a firewall and router. though my main os is still gentoo linux. if i could see my pc screen-in-screen on amiga i would give it a try.

and here comes the stylesheet capable browser: http://www.amiga-news.de/de/news/AN-2006-06-00085-DE.html
(soon translated to english, you can try by clicking the flag)

I can see my PC screen in a window on my workbench. That's the beauty of it. I used to run PC-Task but now I'm just using my PC for certain tasks. And if you've got a network too all USB devices can be seen too. :)

how is that possible? how do you do it? which tool on amiga side is required?

Basically a web-editor, using it for daily web browsing is far too slow and missing JavaScript another limiting factor.
-
im sure it is going to have javascript one day. there are some other projekts with which code could be shared. maybe if all do their efforts together we get one good browser.
-
-
We already have reasonable office applications (AmigaWriter, ProCalc, SuperBase, etc.) and web browsers (AWeb, iBrowse, Voyager).
I don't see any need to port bloatware such as OpenOffice, Mozilla, etc. when we already have our superior Amiga-only alternatives.
I haven't yet seen a site worth visiting that uses Java or CSS.
-
I wouldn't be harassing my European brethren in #Amiga.org chat right now if it weren't for Java.
I wouldn't be able to waste countless hours being entertained at www.homestarrunner.com if it weren't for Java and Flash.
Flash, Shockwave, Java... critical pieces of the Internet experience. If you don't have it, stick to BBS's IMHO.
Another thing would be a simple, easy to use Windows file and print services client. (Mac even comes close to this now, there's no sense in avoiding it since most homes/businesses have it.
RE: Office Applications? I'm not sure. I use Word, Excel and Outlook at work constantly. They have their problems, but I'm in and out of them so much that they've become quite comfortable, and they're again the standard. I ordered Amiga Writer 2 recently and I hope to be able to make use of it at home, but we'll see.
Basically a decent current OS needs to be able to interface with my TV, DVR, Palm, Phone, Cameras etc with the same or greater ease as a PC.
Bluetooth, Firewire, USB2, Wireless Networking, Wired Networking, fully (And I mean FULLY) Multimedia capable.
And all "plug and play".
Oh, and it needs to be able to run World of Warcraft ;)
If I could do this I wouldn't even own a PC at home.

I think that's unrealistic. These projects - Amaya, Amizilla, the KHTML port - are all just that: ports of Linux applications. It wouldn't help a great deal if all the porters get together because it's not like three coders bringing their own projects together to merge into one new one.
As far as I can tell adding Javascript is not on the Amaya roadmap, not would I seriously suggest using it as a browser replacement.
I fear the wait for a modern browser on AmigaOS must go on while longer. Amaya is a decent editor though.

And this, my friends, is THE great obstacle!

@Minuous
