Greetings All:
I was wondering if it is possible to install WB 3.1 on top of an existing WB 3.0 system without destroying the system?
I have done a lot including installing Magic WB 2.1 on my system and of course have it working to my liking.
Appreciate knowing if this is possible.

It's possible. The review of Workbench 3.1 on Aminet was conducted on a machine with 3.0 ROMs.
However, running Workbench 2.1 on 2.04 ROMs is the only "official" instance of running a different version of Workbench than the Kickstart. One could argue that 3.5 and 3.9 also fit into this category, but I think they're a little different.

3.5 and 3.9 do have their own versions of Kickstart. It's just not on a chip.

I believe he was asking more about 'updating' an existing Workbench 3.0 installation to 3.1, and if it would affect anything else on the HD. The ROMs are a separate issue.
Has anyone done this? I've always done a clean installation.

I know that I "should" upgrade my ROMs to 3.1 (and actually that is in my plans) but IIRC WB 3.1 will work with the 3.0 ROMs.
Basically, I am hoping to install my WB 3.1 ontop of my current system without destroying my current data, TCP setup, etc?
Though it would be ideal to have a cleam install of everytihing :-)

You don't loose data and settings, but icons of replaced files will be replaced, too. So you might have to copy your MagicWB icons back after installation.
You should make a backup and just try it out. If something does not work, restore it from the backup. Or restore the entire backup if you totally screwed up.
Bye,
Thomas

My 3.9 setup has been upgraded from an ancient 2.1 via 3.1 and 3.5. And there are some files from 1.3, too - say, narrator.device etc.

@irishmike
Installing WB 3.1 files doesnt give any advantage over 3.0. Relevant changes are in the Kickstart ROM.
