Title: Workbench 3.0 problems
Post by: Kvist on June 09, 2006, 02:28:05 PM
Hi! I just got myself a harddrive for my A1200(Thanks Adonay!!).
So i tried to install WB 3.0 on it. The Hdprep goes just fine, it partition it correctly and everything.
Then i run the installer. After a while, it prompts for the Wb 3.0 diskette and run this up to about 10%, then i get the error:
Can't acces dos-drive, object might already be in use..
It shuts the installation down. And when i try to reboot with the diskette in, it runs for about 10 seconds and stops in Amigados with the number 1..
What to do?? It's frustating!

Cheers, Sigurd

Seems like you made the same mistake I did when I first tried to install Workbench.
You have tried to install Workbench in Novice mode which is bad...your Workbench disk is probably ruined since you've started to install on your Workbench disk instead of the harddrive so now you need a new Workbench disk.
You shoould always install Workbench in Intermediate or Expert mode

That sounds really bad... It seems like it somehow tried to install on the floppy instead of the HD, which means your WB floppy is now ruined.
Always keep your valuable floppies in write protection.

I hope you have backups?
That is also one thing you should do when it comes to disks like WB, make copies.

If you have no backup, then i suggest you upgrade to 3.1 while you are at, since it works just fine even with kickstart 3.0 and has quite a few improvements over wb 3.0.

That is a really shameful bug though.  Much sympathy goes out.

@Kvist:

Always keep your original disks write protected !!!

If it asks you to write enable a disk, there is something wrong. You should never write enable your original disks. If you need to write to a disk, make a backup first.

And as already mentioned, never ever run Installer in novice mode. Novice mode makes assumptions which are nearly always wrong. This does not only apply to the Workbench installation but to all installation scripts which use Installer.

Bye,
Thomas

if you have the disks of 3.1 go for it. it works ok at about 99.99%  :-)
