Title: Freescale gives sample coldfire processors for free! Check their website!
Post by: Spectrum75 on June 09, 2006, 12:31:58 PM
Hi,

Looking for info on the 68K and ColdFire processor I discovered they are giving for FREE, samples of the ColdFire 260 Mhz processor. :-o

The only pre-requisite is you register in their website, and they ask you to fill a short description (about 260 character) of what is the intended use !

I have already applied ! Check their website !

Long live Freescale !! :-)

(PD: Maybe you all already known of this, but for me it was a great and pleasant surprise!)  :-)

Cool stuff, down side is its a high res BGA package so dont expect a "DIY CPU upgrade" design appearing on Aminet any time soon :)

Uhm...

Maybe somebody can make a PCB design for the coldfire wich can fit the Amiga CPU expansion slot... or in the CPU socket.

I suppose it depends on how similar 68K and coldfire wirings are.

You get the proccessor free, you have to pay for the PCB being done and assembled with the resistors, capacitors, connectors, etc.

And if you give them the remaining parts, CPU, clock, (RAM chips?) they will finish the assembly for you. No soldering needed at home!

There are some companies (like PCB Train) that do this kind of thing and have good prices.

So it mostly depends on somebody being able to design the PCB. If this task is done, we even can make a large quantity invoice to the PCB makers for cheaper prices.
