Title: A4000 OS3.9 and a 40 GB HD
Post by: JurassicCamper on May 02, 2003, 02:35:22 PM
I find my self in a bit of a paradox.

Trying to install 3.9 on my new A4000. Thanks to deusi I've got the floppy drives working again.

It was in a bit of a mess but for £50 who's complaining.

Striping it down and puting the case and keyboard case through the dishwasher sorted it out however.

Top Marks to Finish for their Powerballs :-)

Anyway the problem.

The Hard drive that was in it is shafted so it only boots from floppy.
I've put 3.1 roms and a new 40GB HD / 52XCDROM in it.
OS 3.1 HD toolbox reports the drive as -128Meg

OS3.9 supports large drives. So I need to prep the drive under 3.1 to install a CDFS so I can install 3.9.

But I need 3.9 installed for the large disc support.

Chicken and Egg.

Grateful for any advice.  :-?  :-?

Don't mind what HDToolbox says how big (or small) the hdd is, just create a little partition (smaller than 2GB). If this does not work, reduce the number of cylinders in the install dialogue until the hdd is smaller than 2GB.

Then install 3.1 and your cd driver on it and create an OS3.9 emergency disk. Now you have a bootable floppy with cd-rom driver on it and can use the new HDToolbox to install the whole hdd.

Remember that the boot partition still needs to be below the 4GB limit.

Bye
