Title: more than 6mb ??
Post by: 3246251196 on May 18, 2006, 05:51:19 PM
lets say you got an acc' card which only has 4mb FM (6Mb altogether including 1200 chip)

lets say you want more than your total of 6Mb but your acc' wont take more.

is there anything you can do?

put a PCMCIA mem expansion onboard would be one way yes? but what if thats taken up by network card/?

PCMCIA port is 16-bit and the Amiga 1200 has a 32-bit memory when used with an accelerator so adding PCMCIA memory will slow the A1200 down.

some accelerators can only take a certain amount on the board but are compatible with simm stackers
stackers are hard to find and some boards wont address the stacked mem, but it is a possibility

If your accelerator can't take more than 4 MB and you want to use the PCMCIA port for a ethernet card, then there is nothing else to do than to satisfy with the 4 MB or buying another accelerator that can take more than 4 MB, for instance a Blizzard 1230.

it says that for 3.5 you need 4mb fast mem

if i had exactly 4 fast and 2 chip = spec

could i play games from OS

i.e. with my a1200 w/4mb fast mem could i boot into os3.5 and then from there play a game with no problems (not a really advanced game like quake (cannot think of any advance games for amiga) but a game like Theme Park AGA)

what you think?

In theory yes, but remember Workbench will use some of your chip RAM, which means if a game requires 2MB of chip RAM then you will have to boot without Workbench for the game to run.

but in that case - because you cannot change chip ram that applies no matter what fast mem you have. yes?

Yes, that's correct. But the more fast RAM you have, the less you have to load in to chip RAM. There are, for example, tools which allow icons and graphics on Workbench to be loaded in to fast RAM instead of chip RAM, which will give you more chip RAM for games.

a bid is about to end VERY soon and i have to make my mind up.

this is MAX 4mb Fast - can i do everything i want with that:

run os3.5, play AGA games, run CD-drive  and hdd and use PCMCIA netowkr?

You can do all of those things with 4MB, but more will be better.

okay then. thats fine thanks

because i dont have much money i went for this for like 40£ off ebay:

Apollo 1220 (its FPU and CPU are actually 28Mhz) with 4Mb FMem:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250000288281&sspagename=ADME%3AL%3ARTQ%3AUK%3A1&rd=1

hope it doesnt conflict with 3.1ROM

Hmmm! The lazy seller nabbed the photo directly from the Amiga Hardware Database (http://amiga.resource.cx/photos/photo.pl?id=apollo1220) instead of taking his/her own!

This should be fine with a 3.1 ROM.

good stuff.

if the worst comes to the worst i could always replace my PCMCIA network card with a PCMCIA mem exp' instead. though i really would prefer not too

can i ask... programs on 3.9 (like the player which plays AVIs) can you have that os 3.5 too?

(surely you need some sort of g card ??)

What over 40 pounds for a mere 020 accelerator and not even the Blizzard 1220 but an apollo to boot  :-o
For tthat price I would expect an A1200 as a "transportbox" for the card.

i really dont have that much option. i dont want to spend that much money. i know fine well that a 1230 would have been a better option but i am not going to be as such a large amiga user as you. therefore i dont really need that much of a GREAT acc. the fmem should JUST barely be enough to get me through and its not just at 20, but at 28. also has an FPU.

in summation, for me its not a massive deal. my Athlon 64 is my primary computer. but i still want to keep amiga alive of course and this is my reasoning.

I think he means you could have gotten a better boad for the same amount of money, but as long as you are happy, then there isn't anything to worry about.

If you are lucky you can even get a Blizzard 1230 MK4 with SCSI kit for the same amount.

Eventually you will be tired of switching between PCMCIA cards, and running out of memory. OS3.5 and 3.9 will drain your memory much faster than OS3.1 anyway.

i have tried quite a bit to get a 1230 they all come to 90+ and i cannot spend that much. i bit annoying really.

but i am happy with what i have. it should do everything i need it to and thats that ;)

1230

Ram board & Accelerator

for the A1200

With  4mb on board

1x4mb simms

Can take up to 32mb

battery backed clock

630030 processor

68882 MMU

^^^

this better than the Apollo 1220 Acc' ?

A LOT better, coz you can stick 32 meg fast ram on it, and it will be probably clocked at 40+ mhz
