Title: A1200 Accelerator Benchmarks (MIPS)
Post by: StevenJGore on April 30, 2003, 01:43:42 PM
Hi,

Does anybody know a website where I can get benchmarks (preferably in MIPS) for the various A1200 accelerators that are available? I am about to buy one, and thought it might be interesting to compare Blizzard, Apollo, and Viper cards for example, and the difference the amount of installed RAM has on the results. I would also like to compare 030, 040, and 060 processors. I have tried a google search to find the info, but without success.

Cheers!
Steve

Apollo 040 40mhz 31 Mips (motorola says 40)

Apollo 060 66Mhz 51 MIPS
Apollo 020 25Mhz 4 MIPS
Standard A1200 2 MIPS (?)

Anybody know any more? I am particularly interested in a MIPS benchmark for an 030/50Mhz and a 060/50Mhz, just for a comparison.

Try Download SysSpeed It's an excelent freeware compare program, it has a couple of systemmodules included in the archive but you can get others to compare with from aminet...
-Some people love showing off their system speed :-)

Btw, Blizzard 060 is a cool accelerator...

Just put my 50Mhz ocsillator back in DCE (Blizzard)1260/50mhz is 38Mips according to sysinfo

Over clocked to 66Mhz and runs at 51 Mips (Sysinfo)

lorddef, that was exactly what I was looking for.
Every accelerator card under the sun seems to be in the list! I will use the list to help me choose a card.
Many thanks!

Just been studying the results in detail...

It's interesting that the results for an 030/50Mhz aren't that far behind the 060/50Mhz, considering the difference in price. I am tempted to perhaps go for an 030/50Mhz because I am trying to do all this on a budget. Anybody have any experience of what these two processors are like in-game?

Viper 030 28mhz get about 5 mips so 50 mhz is about mips 10 witch is about 486 25mhz

My BlizzardIV 030@50MHz manages just above 10 MIpS according to SysInfo (and my CyberStormPPC w/ 040@25MHz runs at ~20).

Here we go again, when do you people realise that MIPS has nothing to do with real life performance?

MIPS test does not benefit from 060 superscalar, larger caches and other advanced features. 060 is definetely MUCH faster than 030.

MIPS = Meaningless Information about Processor Speed.

Compare BYTEmark, SpecINT and SpecFPU results instead.

I would also like to compare 030, 040, and 060 processors.

You can't use MIPS for this. MIPS is only comparable between exact the same CPUs. 030, 040 and 060 MIPS results can't be compared.

You can compare accelerators with the same CPU, however, but each and every one will give you *exactly* the same result, if they're clocked at the same clockspeed.

Did I already state MIPS is usless? :-)

:-( Dude, don't be so hard on Mips_Proc!  Sure, he's not exactly helpful, but at least he's trying!

 Okay, sometimes he's very trying....

Where can I find the Spec-ourcecodes?
Are they all in C or are some of them written in Frtran?

Hi Steve,

After using both, I can definately express
that the '060 is much faster than the '030 or
even '040.  There is a huge difference. Of
the '060 cards, the blizzard can be disabled
for full compatability which is a nice feature.

As Piru stated, the "mips" rating is not
comparable to real - life performance, but
SysSpeed rates my 1260/65mhz at 86.24 mips.

Thanks for all your replies guys!  :-)

I'm aware that MIPS isn't a particularly good way of comparing different processors, but I had to start somewhere! The Amiga benchmarks on the page that lorddef linked to higher up was exactly the sort of thing I was looking for... comparison tables for accelerator cards and dozens of benchmark tests.

I'm after an accelerator card mainly to upgrade to the sort of capability I would have liked my Amiga to have had in the mid-90's... I'm not particularly interested in running Quake, Wipeout, or any other fancy 3D Amiga games after AB3DII - I've got my AMD 2100+ PC with Geforce 4 for those sorts of games  :-D. I'm upgrading to run 'classic' Amiga 1200 games up to about 1996/7 for nostalgic reasons, and for that I think a Blizzard 1230/50 with 32MB RAM should do just fine.

But I still envy those of you with 060/50's and 060/66's!    :-)

Steve.

For playing older games and such the '030 will
be more than adequate, and loads faster than
the stock setup...have fun! :)

My Apollo 1230Lite - 68030 at 25 Mhz (ignore FPU stuff) - 5.01 MIPS.

and the translation of MIPS ?
- Meaningless Indicator of Processor Speed ... :-P
