A very kind person provided me* with a MacOS 8.1 hardfile which he has been using in ShapeShifter. When I boot from it, the same thing happens as it did before: the emulator hangs while MacOS is booting. The hardfile booted fine under Basilisk for Mac, so it wasn't damaged in transit.
I don't understand this. I am using a working hardfile, and yet two different emulators suffer the same problem. My full configuration is as follows:
A1200
Blizzard 060
128MB RAM
SCSI HDD + CD
Mediator
Voodoo 3 Graphics
Workbench 3.9
What's going on :-(

*I own MacOS 8.1 on CD, alright? :-P

Maybe your 060 is causing compatibility problems? Basilisk II on non-68k systems uses UAE engine for CPU emulation. On Amiga it is running natively on your CPU.
-
Hmmm, maybe. I've still got an 040 so I'll give that a try. Thanks!

Now, that is EXACTLY the same configuration as I am running under, and for me it works just fine, so I guess the word I am looking for here is something like 'weird'. Oh, well, exactly the same configuration besides the SCSI HD... but that shouldn't be the matter (or should it?).

Maybe this line from the Shapeshifter.guide will help:
"On 68060 systems the CPU must be slowed down by disabling caches or the superscalar mode lest MacOS should hang during startup."
Also, make sure the "MacOS 8 mode" checkbox is checked in the preferences (in Miscellaneous).

Any system patches? Blizkick? Are you running FixPatchMac or some other utility?

I never liked Shapeshifter on the '060. It is slow and
clunky. Fusion (Emplant) runs beautifully on the '060.
It out performs just about any 68xxx powered native Mac.
I have OS 8.1 running on my A4000 '060. Basilisk,
howerver, runs great on my old 600 mhz. Windoze machine.
