Wasn't there a headset/goggle monitor type thing for the Amiga way back when? I think I remember it being advertised as being just like watching a movie screen or something. What was it called? Did you have to plug it in to the wall for power?
-
''Amiga Virtual Reality'' that's a good name for AmigaInc :-)
@weirdami: i wish i could help...
-
The thing was called I-Glasses. The "Amiga-Version" didn`t really differ from the PC-Version. There were even some games that supported it like NemacIV.
-
Wow. I never knew the i-Glasses were actually released.
Gloom Deluxe also claims to support them.
-
I think the i-Glasses were made by Escom in the mid-90s... they were very expensive ($1,000+ I think).
Gloom Deluxe was another game that supported them, not that you'd want to play a game like that on a virtual 80' monitor.
;-)
I did read here though that the REAL red and black virtual reality machines used A3000s with some sort of dual GFX card setup.
EDIT:
Ahh, Matt_H beat me!
;-)

It wasn't just the iGlasses - there were at least two other VR products for the Amiga, one of which was used at "Virtual World" centers (a pvp first person shooter - well before DOOM, thank you! called "Dactyl", a racing game and a harrier sim).
-
The original Battletech Outpost used to use a3000s. I know, 'cos I constantly had to fix the {bleep}ers. Then, they 'upgraded' (if you can call it that) to Pentium 100's.
Man, that was a long time ago....

Those must have been 1992/93!
-
@Hyperspeed. Yeah, I believe the original 'Virtuality' VR games used Amigas, not sure of what model, tho. As mentioned, the Battletech outpost multi-player games had an A3000 in each 'cockpit', how's that for an expensive video game! They did use a crummy Mac to print out the 'battle rreport' tho.....
I played both at GenCon here in milwaukee many years ago.
(they also had like 20 A500's running various classic Amiga games, Walker, being the favorite)
:popcorn:
-
Hold on a second... wasn't Xoops censoring the word 'cock(/pit)'?
:-D
I wonder what games would make the Top 10 of the Virtual Reality genre for Amiga. Quake would have to be placed somewhere.
Wonder if the Battletech source-code is floating about...
:-)
Walker was a great game, a very impressive blaster.

'Cockpit' sorry, I forgot that it is illegal to write 99% of the words I use everyday..... :lol:
I would also like to check out the Battletech source, and I don't know a thing about programming... :roll:
And, I must admit, I still fire up Walker now and then...too bad Psygnosis sold thier soul to Sony... :madashell:

Could you be thinking of the X-specs 3D?

Yeah, it was sometime in 1993. It was after I got out of the service.

@Lemmink
I found one on ebay ---->here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=9722765194).
Check out that price. Looks like they still have value these days. It also looks like there's a bunch of other ones like it out now, too.
I was thinking it would be cool to attach a radio camera to a remote control car and feed the signal through the glasses and drive like you were in the seat or something. Now, if I can only figure out how to get a foam disc launcher to work by remote control. :-D
-
One of those virtuality systems (based on an Amiga 3000) was actually for sale here in the netherlands. I seriously considered buying it, be it not for my lack of space, they have a rather large footprint....
-
Didn't the BVision and CVision support it too ?
I remember having such a connector on my card. ?

Imagine a radio controlled helicopter with dual cameras... you could get up to some serious mischief there!
-
I think they were called iGlasses or iGoggles or something like that.
I believe some doom style games like gloom had support for those.

Hey weird,

The heck with foam discs, just use some model rockets! It works quite well with a third channel/servo. :-D

Model rockets... now there's a thought!
I often see radio controlled cars, boats, hovercraft, planes, submarines, helicopters, jets, gliders... but I have yet to see radio controlled cruise missiles.
An Amiga launch base with some i-Glasses and an antennae - all you'd need to start World War 3!
