Subject says it all.

To burn your own roms, you need a screwdriver to take the roms out of the sockets, some alcohol to spill over the roms, and a lighter. :-)

What you need is a ROM-image for the spesific model you intend to burn ROMS for, a ROM burner and ROM(s) (again, depending on model).
The ROM type to use, which actually is an EPROM, is MX27C4100 from Macronix. AGA and A3000 machines need two ROMS each. others use one.

@x56h34: Doesn't that turn the Kickstart ROMs into Toaster ROMs?  :-)

Hi Leo, I have instructions on how to do this for an A1200. What Amiga is it for?

Wouldn't it just be less hassle to buy some? 3.1 ROMs for the A1200 aren't exactly expensive and you'll at least be supporting the few remaining Amiga dealers...

Maybe he wants to customise it.

@x56h34: tried that one already. It didn't work :-D
@mr_white: any special software needed?
@motorollin: I have most Amiga models. But I could start with the A1200 ROM's :-)

Have a look at this thread (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=21814). I have posted some instructions I found on how to burn ROMs for the A1200.

You need a Windows PC and a ROM burner. Software for ROM burner follows all computer controlled ROM-burners. ROM-burners in general are expensive though.
To obtain a ROM image you can copy them from an amiga (same model) which have the ROM version you desire by using a program called TransRom.

The cost of a PROM burner is much higher than that of Kickstart ROMs. It doesn't make sense economically, piracy issues aside.

Look at the EEprom hack on Aminet. You can build a board like a ROM switcher, but using eeproms. Like eproms, they keep their data when powered off, but don't require a special programmer to burn them.

Piracy is not the only reason for burning an ROM image. There is software which can insert BlizKick modules or the OS>=3.5 ROM updates in to a 3.1 kickstart image. Burning them to a chip makes them available from cold boot and eliminates Setpatch and BlizKick reboots.

You could purchase a KickFlashOS4 or a Romulus to speed-up coldstart. This way you needn't to disassable your Amiga everytime you change/patch your Kickstart.

...if you have Zorro slots. A1200s don't, so replacing the chip is the only option.

iirc, there was a way of doing this using an old motherboard by fooling the mobo into thinking you were doing a bios update except the binary is a KS rom?

Dont quote me on that.

IIRC the two unused pins of the rom sockets are for larger capacity roms... so would it be possible to put USB stacks and other good things in there?

or am i pie in the skying it?

Yes double reboots are extremely annoying - especially if you have multiple bootable partitions and a double boot boots you into the wrong one (after already selecting the correct one from the early startup menu).

It would have been nice if they created new ROMs when 3.5 came out so double booting was unnecessary. Most people buying 3.5 had to go out and buy the 3.1 ROM anyway so why not buy 3.5 ROM instead? Maybe they had a load of old surplus 3.1 chips and they wanted to sell them instead of the expense of making new chips. Certainly now that there won't be any more ROM library updates, it would be nice if somebody produced a bunch of 3.9 ROMs with final versions of everything (with legal approval of course).

This could be done legally. Someone with a large stock of 3.1 ROMs could amalgamate the 3.9 ROMUpdate in to a 3.1 ROM image, burn it to EPROMs, and supply the ROM chip with the EPROM. To make sure the ROM chips can't be used in another computer, the legs could be cut off. That way you purchase the ROM chip and AInc or whoever get their royalty, and the user gets an updated ROM chip ready for 3.9.
