I've just managed to get my CD-ROM working in ShapeShifter. If I boot from my MacOS 8.1 CD, it gets as far as loading the title bar and background of the OS, then the Amiga just reboots. I have tried booting the Mac without extensions but the same thing happens.
I'm running ShapeShifter 3.11 on OS3.9 with a Blizzard 060, 128MB RAM, SCSI, Mediator, Voodoo. Sometimes just before it reboots the cursor becomes corrupt, then the Amiga restarts. Other times the Amiga just restarts.
I have tried a Quadra 605 and an LC630 ROM. I also tried Basilisk II, but just get a Bus Error when I boot MacOS.

To my knowledge, only Basilisk runs 8.1 and that's only if you have the 2MB rom image. I'd offer to fire up my Amithlon box for you, but I don't have an 8.1 CD.
Wish I could help more.

Thanks, I'll try to get hold of a 2MB ROM image and try Basilisk.
Cheers

Hmm... Aren't there two versions of 8.1? (A PPC only CD that was sold with the new PowerMacs, and a "fat" 68k or PPC version).
I seem to remember having a 8.1 CD that didn't work because it was expecting PPC. In fact, it came with the truly dreadful PowerMac 7200 I accidently obtained.

The requirements on the box say "A Mac OS-based computer with a 68040 or PowerPC processor". So it should be ok shouldn't it? Does Shapeshifter emulate an 040 ok? Or does it depend on the ROM image you use?
The box also says it needs 128MB of RAM - does it really? I selected 64MB for the emulator.

Yeah... Sounds like the "fat" version. I think the PPC only version was never sold on it's own, and only with the early gen PowerMacs.
I have no idea what memory requirements for MacOS 8.1 really are. 128MB sounds quite hefty, though.

have you set these tooltypes for 060?
(QUICKSTART)
(ENFORCER)
(DEBUG)
NOCOPYBACK
720KKLUDGE
(REMAP8K)
(USKEYMAP)
(NOQDACCEL)
-
Hi Framiga, I just checked that and enabled NOCOPYBACK, and disabled REMAP8K. I booted again and got an error 'Sorry, a system error occurred. "Finder" CHK error [Restart]'

no idea then. I had SS with a 040 and MacOS 7.6 or so.
Soon i'll try to reinstall with the 060. (i'm curious to see how it feels with a 060)
But... have you ever got SS working with a older MACOS?
If you will install a MAC partition, remember that it must be max 2GB within the first 4GB barrier.

Yes ShapeShifter was working with 7.5. I'm using a hardfile, not a Mac partition. The error message I mentioned before is gone now - it has gone back to just freezing again :-(

no idea moto! above all with you setting (Med+Voodoo)
Good luck :-)

I have tried System 7.5.5, MacOS 7.6.1 and 8.0 succesfully in ShapeShifter. MacOS 8.1 (update over 8.0) also freezes my setup. Corrupted mouse pointer also. I can boot it though with no extensions!
For me 8.0 also gives troubles with Open Transport. 7.6.0 also freezes; I have to disable AppleShare then it works.
So I stick with 7.5.5 which works fine. Also that's a free download so I can get it in my native language.
-
good to know! IIRC 7.5.5 was faster and stable too

I'm also running MacOS 8.1 in 64Mb RAM and it hasn't complained... This is on the x86 version of Basilisk II.

Shapeshifter can handle without any problem MacOS 8.1 with 1MB rom image.
First it need to install MacOS 8.0 and then install 8.1 update.
In this case it works on many different amiga..
Maybe there some problem to update to 8.1.. :/
However in MacOS 8.1 CD should be included some rom images (into macos 8.5 PPC are included rom images).

Thanks for the info Seiya. My MacOS disc is version 8.1 out of the box, so I can't install 8.0 then upgrade it. I managed to get Basilisk II to boot from a 7.5.3 starter hardfile. I also added a 1GB hardfile for the OS, and got my CD-ROM working. So I booted from 7.5.3, and I'm just installing 8.1 on to the 1GB hard file. Will let you know if it works when it's done...
Thanks

Well it didn't work. The emulated Mac hangs when booting the installed MacOS 8.1. Losing patience now! :-(

However i saw and i red in some forum and chat, that 8.1 version in some case and in some amiga platform cause some problems like you.
Sure, macos 8.0 works very well.
Shapeshifter support macos 8.1, but don't works on any configuration.
-
Sounds rather odd.
I've ran MacOS8.1 on my A1200 equipped with Blizzard 1230, and later on, on the same machine, with Blizzard 1260 together with a Mediator/Voodoo3. ShapeShifter had no problems whatsoever with the OS.
However, I did install it through Basilisk under Windows since my Amiga had no CD-Rom at the time. It was version 8.0 from CD, which I after the install updated to 8.1. I just moved the hardfile to my Amiga and voilá.

I think that's the point - I need to install 8.0 first. I wish Apple had put version 8.0 on the 8.1 disc, like on the OS3.9 disc! I have found somewhere to "obtain" 8.0, so I will try installing that.

Actually I got 8.1 working under Basilisk for Windows, and I did try copying the hardfile on to my Amiga. Didn't work though :-(
