Title: A500 - How much can I expand it!
Post by: GreggBz on April 26, 2006, 02:57:56 PM
Does anyone know if this: Harms Professional 030' Accelerator (http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=1637)
will work with this: ICD AdIDE 40 (http://www.amiga-hardware.com/showhardware.cgi?HARDID=552)

I'm not to concerned about clearence because I plan on towerizing the
whole system soon.

I currently have 1.3 roms, an 4 MB ram card, and the ICD scan-doubler, flicker fixer in my mighty A500. I guess I might as well make the ultimate A500 tower now that there is a 030 accelerator on Ebay.
That's the plan anyway.

Does someone make an A500 tower kit?  Or, do you plan to try this on your own?

Well, I had notions of putting it in an old Cisco router box,
with a modified TFX power supply.

It'll be homemade basically.

Micronik did once make tower expansions for the A500, inluding Zorro slots and even a 2000-style CPU slot. They are pretty rare though.
But imagine putting a Blizzard 2060 in a 500.... :)

The Bodega bay was also nice, it sat on top of the A500 making it look like a desktop computer, it would also take Zorro Expansion cards.

ICD's products in general were pretty picky about compatibility with other h/w.  You could just try it and see if it works.

I remember the Bodega Bays, did it also have a video slot, or just
strictly ZorroII?

From the hardware information:

"The card must be fitted underneath any accelerator which also occupies the CPU socket."

Using some very abstract logic here, I'll make the assumption that the timing/innerupts on the pins on the bottom of the accelerator are adjusted so that's it's transparent to the rest of the hardware. So, I guess it will just look like a 68000 to the ICD device.

Oh, don't "towerize" the poor old thing. You'll just turn it into a "towerized" A2000, defeating the whole purpose of the A500. My upgraded A500 looks like a stock A500 from the outside. And check out Lemmink's A500 - probably the best A500 upgrade I have ever seen: http://home.joice.net/j100513/scans/temp/A500

I have an old AmigaWorld magazine with a Bodega Bay advertisement. I always thought it was the ugliest, most disgusting A500 add-on in Amiga history.

This Amigan totally agrees with mr_a500!

If you can't find either a Viper520CD or 530, the ultimate all in one case A500 would be an ICD AdIDE in the 68000 cpu slot, internal 2.5" harddisk, 4.5mb fast ram on trapdoor ICD AdRAM card.  I wonder if anyone has gotten an ide laptop cdrom to work with the AdIDE board?

Another possibility, though external, is Jens' new Buddha adaptor for the A500 86-pin expansion slot.

Don't towerize it!!!! An Amiga 500 is beautiful on his original case, also if accelerated enough is interesting showing it running quake and showing at a friend who never wondered that a 500 could do that ;)
Also, are you saying that Jens Schoenfeld has made a buddha for the 500?? If it's real it could be an interesting addon for my 500!!!

Quake on an A500?

I've done a lot of things with my A500 - ran MacOS 8.1, faxed PDFs I made, scanned 24bit images from DVD movies, played DOOM, and I'm even using it to type this post - but Quake is impossible.

I remember ICD products being incompatible with most things as well.  I have an old AdSpeed around here somewhere.  It was a 68000 clocked at 14 Mhz, a modest speed increase when coupled with some true fast ram, next to worthless without fast ram.  I was running an A570 CD drive at the time, never found any accel. compatible with it including AdSpeed.

For what its worth, I've always thought the A500 casing looked great by itself.  If you can boost performance/function and still keep that look, it'll be very cool.

I forgot.

@ Mr A500

I would be interested in details of your modifications.  I have several A500s that I would like to develop into unique machines.

Well then they won't be unique ;-).

I didn't do anything too clever (nothing amazing like Lemmink). I got a Viper 520 - which gives me a 33Mhz 68020, 8Mb 32bit Fast RAM, 3.0 A1200 ROMs and 2,5" IDE, then I added a 40Gb 5400RPM 2.5" HD and 68882 FPU. I got a Mini Megi 2Mb Chip and ECS Denise. I already had an A501.

I use WB3.1. If you haven't seen my screenshots, here's one:
http://www.amiga.org/gallery/photo.php?lid=2533

You should definitely get DCTV. It's awesome. You can view and scan 24bit composite images (requires 1084 or TV). You can't use it to make WB 24-bit. I use it to display jpegs or scan still images.

Ok, you guys talked me out of it. No tower.
I definitely plan on doing something interesting and exciting with it. I'm thinking a nice white color. What to do with the keys though..

The system is currently:
ICD FlickerFixer
ICD AdRam
ICD AdIDE40

300MB Quantum Hard Drive.
Magnavox Monitor.

Except for my monster 500T/060-57/CV3D :-D
(but just 10-12 fps...)

I believe is technically *possible* to make quake run on an ECS Amiga, but you'd probably need 2mb of chip ram and it would be limited in color and give new meaning to slow.

Would be a technical feat if anybody out there is interested (Peter McGavin?).

Not only that, but you'd need a motherlode of Fast RAM. Running Doom II, some levels require 4Mb heapsize (continuous block) to load (about 6Mb total). I bet Quake would require 32Mb at least.

Anyway, forget Quake. The two games I'd want are Warcraft II and Hexen. (..another impossible dream)

@Mr.a500
Even on 040 with viper accelerator is impossible?
I think that the max of ram with one of these accel. boards could do the trick.
By the way, when i get on my hands one of those definitely
i will try that!!!!.
Oh, forgot to mention that the 040 board that existed and i Peripherals mode. Don-t know if any of the vipers reached 040.
Please anyone knowing that clear it up.

My Viper 520 is 33Mhz 020 as I said, with 8Mb RAM maximum (not expandable). The ultra-rare Viper 530/E-Matrix 530 (same thing) is 50Mhz 030, 64Mb expandable to 128Mb RAM maximum (Lemmink has one!). I think less than 10 of those were sold.

There was no 040 Viper - not even planned.

What to do with the Keys???   Well, just do what I did..Paint them too! :-)

http://www.amiga.org/gallery/index.php?n=1423

I labeled each key what it was underneath before I painted them..that way I know where to place them and not confuse them........I even painted the CAPS Lock key.so you cant see the light now hehe......but i did not paint under the keys......so they are still in their original Amiga white.

I thought Quake ran on ECS or was that ADoom.

Anyway there was a 040 upgrade for the A500 back in the day, pretty rare now.  If someone was to make one with 128MB+ RAM that would be nice...

@ Mr_a500

Was it you that likes to test Dir utils?  I use Ordering on slower Amigas because it's very fast. I don't think it's deveolped anymore and has a minor bug that's easily worked around.  I think it's written in assembler, could be wrong though.  Give it a shot, its on Aminet.

Also, I've enjoyed your screen shots, inspirational!

Off topic, sorry guys.

Well, it's not a hobby of mine or anything. I was just looking for the best one. I started a poll on EAB (Dopus currently winning - who knew? ;-)):

http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=22887

I tried Ordering and it wasn't bad, but I still thought ABCdir was better.

I'm glad you liked my screenshots. Those are now old and I've got a much better configuration (..I'm always saying that :-D).

There's people with A500/060 (a2k accelerator) and gfx cards like PIV. I guess it's pretty much best you can get with a500...

Ok, so the only 040 made was the one from Progressive & Peripherals as i thought at first.
On the other hand, Zipper, are you saying you have a 060 on your 500 tower?

Are you saying that the use of a2000 accels on 50 0is possible?

Sinse seeing your screen shots, I've been playing with the Amigas without graphics cards for the last couple of days.  I'm looking with renewed interest at color schemes that reduce or eliminate flicker.  I've approximated one of yours and it works great in Ordering.  Thanks agsin.

I'm sure many here would love to see your latest efforts.  I would.

Reduce flicker in WB3.1 or WB1.3? For WB1.3, I have lots of reduced flicker colour schemes (system-configuration). I used to spend a lot of time reducing flicker. Blues and greens work best.

For WB3.1, the key is to not use black as your shadow colour because in scrollbars it is next to the highlight colour (usually white). A horizontal black line above or below a horizontal white line is "flicker city". I use VisualPrefs to set my shadow colour medium grey (8,8,9).

Yes, in a Micronik tower - and a handy person could perhaps add one to the side expansion port
